Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the narrator of the story?

Answer: Nurse Amy

Nurse Amy Leatheran is the narrator of the novel. The novel starts with Nurse Amy going to Baghdad with a patient, where she meets Dr. Reilly. On completion of her Baghdad assignment, she is given a case by Dr. Reilly.
2. Why did Dr. Leidner need a nurse?

Answer: To look after his wife Louise

Dr. Reilly introduces Nurse Amy to Dr. Leidner, an archaeologist. Dr. Leidner wishes to hire Nurse Amy to look after his wife Louise Leidner. Dr. Leidner tells Nurse Amy that his wife was having nervous terrors and imagined things. He does not elaborate on her troubles and asks Amy to come down to Tell Yarimjah - the site of the expedition.
3. Who among the following, according to Nurse Amy, looked like a death's head?

Answer: Richard Carey

Nurse Amy arrives at Tell Yarimjah and is taken to tea, where she meets everyone. She feels that Richard Carey, the architect, was the most handsome man she had seen.
She also felt that he looked like a death's head. During the tea Nurse Amy observed that the atmosphere was too formal and it seemed like a party of strangers.
4. Mrs. Leidner refuses to confide her problems to Nurse Amy.

Answer: False

Mrs. Leidner confides to Nurse Amy that she is receiving threatening letters. Initially Louise was married to one Fredrick Bosner, who she found was a German spy. So Louise had him arrested and he was later believed to be dead. But after her marriage to Dr. Leidner, she receives letters purportedly from Fredrick which threaten to kill her. That is the reason for her nervous fears.
5. How does Louise Leidner die?

Answer: Bludgeoned to death

Dr. Leidner goes into his wife's room and comes out shocked and informs Nurse Amy that his wife is dead. When Nurse Amy goes in, she finds that Louise had been bludgeoned to death and there is no weapon to be found. She also observes that it has been an hour since her death.
6. How does Hercule Poirot enter into the case?

Answer: He is called in by Captain Maitland

Hercule Poirot came to Baghdad after solving a case in Syria. Captain Maitland, the police office in charge of the case asks Dr. Leidner's permission to call him into the case. Poirot comes in to the case and is assisted by Nurse Amy (who plays the sidekick role, usually essayed by Captain Hastings!)
7. A second murder takes place; who is the victim?

Answer: Miss Johnson

While Miss Johnson is out on the terrace along with Nurse Amy, she suddenly exclaims that she knows how somebody could come from outside and commit the murder without being seen. Those words turn out to be her death warrant. At night, someone replaces the water jug with a bottle of acid. Mrs. Johnson drinks the acid by mistake at night and dies.

While dying, her last words are 'Nurse... the window'.
8. Where is the murder weapon found?

Answer: Under Miss Johnson's bed

The murder weapon used to bludgeon Louise Leidner was a big quern. It was found under Miss Johnson's bed. The idea of the murderer was to create an impression that Miss Johnson killed Louise and out of remorse took poison and died.
9. One of the expedition members, Father Lavigne. disappears. What had happened to him?

Answer: He was a criminal and had escaped

Father Lavigne was a new member to Dr. Leidner's expedition. He was supposed to be an expert in decoding tablets. In reality he was a forger named Raoul Menier and had impersonated Father Lavigne. He had made duplicates of all the gold items and escaped with his loot.
10. As usual, Poirot reveals the name of murderer in a stunning denouement. Who killed Louise Leidner?

Answer: Dr. Leidner

Dr. Leidner was none other than Fredrick Bosner, the first husband of Louise. He had taken on the identity of Dr. Leidner and after making sure that Louise would not remember him, married her. When they came to the expedition, Dr. Leidner found that she had an affair with his friend Richard Carey. Dr. Leidner then decided to kill her and sent her threatening notes. Dr. Leidner killed Louise from the terrace by drawing her to the window and then dropping the quern on her head.

He then went into her room, shifted the body and came out and informed Nurse Amy.

The only reason he hired the nurse was to prove that Louise had been killed an hour earlier and not at the time he went into the room!
