When they came to the expedition, Dr. Leidner found that she had an affair with his friend Richard Carey. Dr. Leidner then decided to kill her and sent her threatening notes. Dr. Leidner killed Louise from the terrace by drawing her to the window and then dropping the quern on her head. He then went into her room, shifted the body and came out and informed Nurse Amy. The only reason he hired the nurse was to prove that Louise had been killed an hour earlier and not at the time he went into the room!
