Question 1 of 10
1. When I was introduced to this guy and talked to him a bit, I noticed that he had a funny accent. "Are you French?" I asked him. He seemed deeply offended by this question, because, in his opinion, I HAD to know not only his nationality, but also who he was. My ignorance was beyond him... It turned out that he was an eccentric Belgian, who used to live in England and had a big mustache and a "mysterious" career.
Who is this strange stranger?
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. This depressed teenager was sleeping in the ground when I found him. He had a packsack beside him. I woke him up and asked him who he was and where he was going. "That's a complicated question" he replied. "You know, they say that I'm a modern Huckleberry Finn. But what do I know? I mean, I read a lot but I'm quite illiterate. I had a difficult childhood... But who didn't, right? I'm going to the West, but I don't care whether I will make it or not".
Well, he "catched" my attention, but do you remember his name?
Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. "What?" this tall, deadly serious, blue eyed man said to me. "You don't know me? How is it possible? My creator is one of the best selling living authors of your world. Ka, destiny if you like, ordered me to save the Mid-World by finding the one and only connection of the parallel universes". "I don't believe in destiny or parallel universes, Mr. Whatsyournameagain", I replied, only to hear him speak with his deep voice again: "Have you forgotten the face of your father, sai?"
Do you remember this hero's name?
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. This beautiful woman I met next, seemed so young, yet thousands of years old. She had a vision, she told me, about the fate of all the citizens of Charactersland, but she wouldn't tell to anybody. I asked her why. "You mean you haven't heard of me? I'm the princess with the charisma of prophecy, and a curse which causes everybody to ignore my predictions. I'm all alone. I lost everything" she replied. "Nonsense" I told her "I don't believe you". She seemed desperate.
What's the name of this tragic princess?
Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. One of the most respected citizens of Charactersland was this sweet pregnant woman, who was always singing a lullaby to the baby inside her. Or so I thought. As I realized later, the other characters weren't respectful at all. They were just trying to avoid getting in trouble with her... It seemed that this innocent girl frightened them! "It's not her that scares us" one of them whispered in my ear, looking behind his shoulder at the same time, "It's the baby!"
Do you know the mother's name?
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. "Hey what's the problem?" I asked this royally dressed man who was holding a skull and seemed deeply troubled. "Well" he said "even here I can't find the answer to life's most important question. Is it better to be or not to be after all?". "Well, that's easy. To be, of course" I said. "But I have a more difficult question for you sir. Who are you?"
Do you know?
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Later, I found out that even in this unusual country people were celebrating Christmas. I noticed that one particular Victorian residence was the only not decorated house in the area. "That's because the old man who lives there isn't celebrating Christmas" one of the characters said to me. "In fact" he continued "I wouldn't recommend you to stay here after the sunset. I've heard that a few creepy spirits will visit him this night. This could probably change his mind about people, Christmas and himself".
Do you remember the name of that miserable and grouchy old man?
Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Even Charactersland's society wasn't ready for this woman. She seemed brokenhearted, lost and hopeless, and yet flirtatious, with a strange smile on her face. "People say that I'm completely mad" she said "because I trust them. I even trust strangers. That's funny, because after the boy's death, I'm sick. And my own brother-in-law wasn't someone I could trust after all".
Do you recognize this tragic heroine?
Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. "Hey" I said to the last person I met, "where is Harry Potter? I know this one, he was also in some movies, but I haven't seen him yet". I understood that he was annoyed by the angry look on his face, when he talked to me back. "Why do you need to see him? I'm so much better than him and a non-Muggle of course". I thought he could be one of Harry's schoolmates, jealous of his talents and fame. He was just a tall and pale teenager, but seemed quite evil to me, so I left him and walked my way out of Charactersland.
Do you remember what he's called?
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. I woke up in my bed. I realised that I was just dreaming. I was still in Athens, the capital city of Greece where I was born and raised. And... hey, I enjoy reading literature, and some of the characters mentioned above are favorites of mine. I realised what caused me to dream about them. Beside me there was this futuristic novel I was currently reading, by a very talented young Greek author called Nikos Vlandis. The book's title is "Writersland". It's a story about a strange island of the 22nd century, populated by copyists who rewrite classic works, and call themselves after the original novelists. One of the citizens causes trouble in the peaceful island. The name he goes by is the name of the Pulitzer winning novelist who once wrote "The Virgin Suicides" and "Middlesex". I assume that most of you haven't read "Writersland", as its available only in the Greek language, but can you "guess" the character's name? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Hercule Poirot

Agatha Christie's most famous character, the detective Hercule Poirot, appeared in 33 novels and 54 short stories. In "Curtain: Poirot's Last Case", the famous hero died, before he had the chance to solve another mystery - or so every other character and the readers thought. Poirot in fact left a note just before he died, in which he identified the murderer. I won't spoil it for you. Just read it and you'll be shocked!

Answer: Holden Caulfield

Holden Caulfield is the main character, and fictional narrator, of J.D. Salinger's great (and probably only) novel "The Catcher in the Rye". It was published in 1951, became very popular immediately, and remains one of the most important novels on the subject of adolescence ever written.

It also made the "Time" magazine list of the 100 best English-language novels, from 1923 to today. "I'm quite illiterate, but I read a lot" is an actual Holden's quote from the book.
Whatsyournameagain", I replied, only to hear him speak with his deep voice again: "Have you forgotten the face of your father, sai?" Do you remember this hero's name?

Answer: Roland Deschain

Of course this is Roland Deschain of Gilead, or "the Gunslinger" from the "Dark Tower" series of books, by Stephen King. Will we ever see him in the big screen? As of January 2008, all we know is that Mr. King sold to J.J. Abrams, the creator of the "Lost" TV series, the option to make a "Dark Tower" movie / movies or TV series.

It's interesting that the author was paid a symbolic value of 19$ - and 19 is a number that plays its own important role in the "Dark Tower" novels.

Answer: Cassandra

We all know the prophetess Cassandra, the mythological princess of Troy who was given by Apollo the gift of predicting the future, and the curse of not being believed, which (indirectly) caused the fall of Troy. As a character we find her in many ancient Greek writings and plays, but mostly in the tragedies written by Euripides. Did you know that Abba wrote and performed a great song inspired by her? Some of the lyrics are:
"Sorry Cassandra I misunderstood
Now the last day is dawning
Some of us wanted but none of us could
Listen to words of warning
But on the darkest of nights
Nobody knew how to fight
And we were caught in our sleep
Sorry Cassandra I didn't believe
You really had the power
I only saw it as dreams you would weave
Until the final hour."
"It's not her that scares us" one of them whispered in my ear, looking behind his shoulder at the same time, "It's the baby!" Do you know the mother's name?

Answer: Rosemary Woodhouse

Rosemary Woodhouse is the famous heroine of "Rosemary's Baby", by the American novelist Ira Levin. Rosemary is a pregnant woman who suspects that her husband and their neighbors are involved in a conspiracy to take the baby from her and sacrifice it to Satan, but the truth is much scarier...

The novel wasn't very successful, until it inspired the homonymous movie, directed by Roman Polanski, in which a very young Mia Farrow starred. Some of Levin's other works include "The Boys from Brazil", "A Kiss before Dying", "Sliver" and "The Stepford Wives". All of them were made into successful movies. Ira Levin died in November 2007.
Who are you?" Do you know?

Answer: Hamlet

William Shakespeare's famous tragedy "Hamlet", one of his most popular plays, was written around 1600. It's about the Prince of Denmark, who watched his mother remarry with his father's (the King's) brother, after the King's murder. Hamlet is a very sensitive hero, irate and disappointed by the nature of people, who is planning his revenge and theorizing about the aspects and value of life. As a play "Hamlet" above all, is a philosophical study, and the greatest example of this is the "To be or not to be" speech of this passionate hero.

Answer: Ebenezer Scrooge

Ebenezer Scrooge is the well known main character of the famous Charles Dickens novella "A Christmas Carol". Even though the book was first published on 1843, it remains one of the most popular Christmas tales of all time, and has a significant number of adaptations for theatre, TV, radio and the big screen.

In 1947 Ebenezer Scrooge inspired a young and ambitious comic book creator, named Carl Barks, who was working for Walt Disney at that time. This resulted in the creation of Scrooge McDuck, the beloved comic character, whose adventures never end.

Answer: Blanche Dubois

Blanche Dubois is the main character in Tennessee Williams' play "A Streetcar Named Desire", written in 1947. Williams was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, for this work. Everyone remembers Vivian Leigh playing the role of Blanche (a performance which earned her an Oscar) in the homonymous film that Elia Kazan directed.

But do you remember Marge Simpson, from "The Simpsons" playing the role in the episode titled "A Streetcar Named Marge"? In my country, Greece, one of the most famous theatrical adaptations of the play featured the late Melina Mercouri as Blanche. During the show she sang a soulful song, the English title of which would be "Paper Moon".

It was written by Manos Hatzidakis and Nikos Gatsos. This is my translation of some of the lyrics: "The moon is made from paper and the beach is fake but if you just believed me, everything would be real".

Answer: Draco Malfoy

The young wizard Draco Malfoy from the J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series is one of the Slytherin students in Hogwarts, a sworn enemy of Harry and, in the words of the author, "someone who is very capable of compartmentalizing his life and his emotions, and always has done. So he's shut down his pity, enabling him to bully effectively. He's shut down compassion - how else would you become a Death Eater?" I'd like to add that "draco" means "dragon" in the Greek language.
10. I woke up in my bed. I realised that I was just dreaming. I was still in Athens, the capital city of Greece where I was born and raised. And... hey, I enjoy reading literature, and some of the characters mentioned above are favorites of mine. I realised what caused me to dream about them. I assume that most of you haven't read "Writersland", as its available only in the Greek language, but can you "guess" the character's name?

Answer: Jeffrey Eugenides

Jeffrey Eugenides is an American author with Greek and Irish roots, and became popular by writing just two novels - but how great they are! I had to include this last question, as the inspiration of this quiz was this brilliant novel by Nikos Vlandis. The author, apart from "Writersland", has written some very good books, such as "Greek Psycho", "Your Deserved Oblivion" and "www.ourhouse.gr". Unfortunately, apart from their titles, his works aren't translated to other languages yet, but I hope they soon will. I'm sure many people in the world would enjoy reading them.
