Answer: Queequeg

Queequeg is a harpooner on the Pequod, captained by the obsessive Captain Ahab in 'Moby Dick' by Herman Melville. He is from the South Pacific, and the island from which he comes is cannibalistic. Queequeg is one of the first major characters encountered by the narrator Ishmael, after they stay in the same room at an inn near the beginning of the novel.

2. One of nine who went on a quest to defeat an evil lord

Answer: Boromir

In the first book of the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy by JRR Tolkien, Boromir is one of the eight characters who accompany the ring bearer, Frodo Baggins, in his journey to destroy the 'one ring'. The antagonist is Sauron, who wants the ring to enhance his powers.

Answer: Adela Quested

E.M. Forster's 'A Passage to India' is about both British stereotypes of life in India in the 1920s and the racism and oppression faced by Indians under British rule. In it, a group of friends - some Indian and some English - go on a sightseeing trip to the Marabar Caves. Adela Quested, one of the English ladies, mistakenly accuses an Indian man, Dr Aziz, of assaulting her and - despite the lack of any evidence - he is arrested and tried by the British authorities.

Answer: Alexander Smollett

In 'Treasure Island' by Robert Louis Stevenson, Alexander Smollett was the captain of the ship that set off to locate the titular island that had been discovered on a map found by a young man named Jim Hawkins. Unfortunately, his crew had been infiltrated by pirates and Smollett ended up injured but, luckily, on the winning side.

Answer: Lemuel Gulliver

'Gulliver's Travels' was written by Jonathan Swift and published in 1726. Gulliver meets the people of Lilliput, who are under six inches in height, the huge inhabitants of Brobdingnag, and the Houyhnhnms, horses who can talk, during his journeys. Swift intended it as a satire, partly of books about travelling.

Answer: Jim

Jim is one of the main characters from Mark Twain's 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn'. Jim and Huck ride down the Mississippi on a raft after both flee their lives in Missouri - Jim because he is a slave, and Huck because of his drunkard father.

7. Backbone of a family of "Okies" as they travel west in search of a better life

Answer: Ma Joad

Ma Joad is the matriarch of the central family in John Steinbeck's 'The Grapes of Wrath'. After seeing an advertisement for work in California and realising that they can no longer prosper on their farm in Oklahoma, the whole family begin a journey westwards. The main character in the novel is Tom Joad, the second son, who strives to take responsibility as the journey progresses.

8. Survived a Pacific Ocean shipwreck with a tiger for company

Answer: Piscine Patel

The character is better known as Pi, from Yann Martel's novel 'The Life of Pi'. According to Pi, the narrator, he survives despite having to share his lifeboat with a tiger, named Richard Parker, which has already eaten a hyena.

Answer: Otto Lidenbrock

Professor Otto Lidenbrock is an academic geologist who leads an expedition to the Icelandic volcano Snæfell in Jules Verne's 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth'. He is accompanied on his expedition by his nephew Axel and their guide Hans Bjelke.

Answer: Sal Paradiso

'On the Road' was a fictionalised version of Jack Kerouac's early life with various other members of his generation. The book covers the late 1940s, and was published in 1957. The narrator, Sal Paradiso, is Kerouac himself and other characters include Old Bull Lee (William S. Burroughs) and Carlo Marx (Allen Ginsberg).
