Minato Namikaze was Konoha's fourth Hokage, and died when he sacrificed himself to seal the Nine Tailed Fox Demon (Kyuubi) into Naruto to protect the village. In chapter 403 "Tears", it is revealed that Naruto had a chance encounter with Itachi Uchiha, a missing-nin from Konoha that murdered his whole clan. The story later unveils that the Uchihas were planning to overthrow Konoha, but Itachi stopped them under the third Hokage in order to protect the village.

Itachi was told to kill everyone, but he couldn't kill Sasuke, his little brother. Itachi questions Naruto, asking what if Sasuke were to invade Konoha, would Naruto kill him or would he let Konoha be destroyed. Naruto answers he would save Konoha and save Sasuke's life.

Itachi then smiles and gives him some of his power, saying "I hope the day never comes when you have to use it."
