Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The prologue takes place the day before Richard Mayhew moves to London. His going-away party is being held at a pub in a small Scottish town. Which of the following takes place during Richard's encounter with the old woman?

Answer: All of these

Bored by the party, Richard steps outside into the rainy night. There he encounters an old woman who thinks he is homeless. She offers him fifty pence, which he refuses with embarrassment. She then tells him that she used to be homeless and she also used to live in London.

She then takes his hand and reads his fortune. She tells him that he has a long way to go, and to watch out for doors. As she walks off in the rain, Richard runs after her and gives her his umbrella with a map of the London Underground on it that he had himself just received as a going-away present.

She tells him he has a kind heart, which may - or may not - be enough to get him through.

There is a lot of foreshadowing here of themes that recur throughout the story: homelessness, the subway, doors, rats, and having a kind heart.
2. Who are the two men pursuing Door?

Answer: Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar

When we first meet Door, she is being hunted by Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar, who are trying to kill her. They wound her, but she manages to escape by opening a door to London Above.

These two men are vicious psychopathic killers-for-hire who apparently have been around for centuries. They live in the filthy, humid basement of an abandoned hospital. Mr. Croup has red hair and blue eyes and likes to use big words. Mr. Vandemar is more the strong, silent type: he is a big man who says little. He is always hungry and likes to eat frogs, birds, and anything else he can get his hands on.

Varney is a bodyguard, Old Bailey is a bird vendor, and Lord Portico is Door's late father. None of them are pursuing Door.
3. While on the way to dinner with Jessica, Richard spies the injured Door face down on the sidewalk, bleeding. Which of the following does he NOT do?

Answer: Call 999 on his mobile phone and go to the restaurant with Jessica.

Jessica, worried about being late to the dinner with her boss, urges Richard to just call 999 for an ambulance and leave. But Richard, without even thinking, picks up the bleeding girl and carries her home, as Jessica threatens to break off their engagement.

Richard helps bandage Door up and lets her sleep on his couch and use his bathroom. While she's in the bathroom, Croup and Vandemar show up at his place, looking for her. He lies and says he has not seen her. They search his apartment, including the bathroom, but don't find her.

After they leave, Door mysteriously reappears. She delivers a message by carrier pigeon and a rat shows up with a response. She then sends Richard to an alley to deliver a message to the Marquis de Carabas requesting his help. During this time, he meets Old Bailey on a rooftop.

Door thanks Richard and leaves with the Marquis. Meanwhile, Jessica has left Richard an angry message breaking off their engagement.
4. What does Richard collect?

Answer: troll dolls

Richard started out with one troll, and soon people started giving him more of them because they thought he collected them. He keeps/kept a whole bunch of them in his office.

His fiancee, Jessica, tolerates this, because she believes all important and successful men have collections. Her boss, Mr. Stockton, collects angels.

Richard, being Scottish, likes Scotch but does not collect it.
5. What does the Marquis take from the late Lord Portico's study?

Answer: both of these

Door and the Marquis go to Door's magical family home, which is full of sad memories. They are trying to find the diary of Lord Portico, Door's father, to try to solve the mystery of his death and also to get an idea of where to go for help.

While Door is distracted, the Marquis steals a small carving of a boar or bear (which we later learn is The Beast) and slips it into his pocket. After viewing the diary of Door's father, the Marquis takes his pocket watch. When Door complains, the Marquis responds, "He's not using it anymore, is he?"
6. What does the angel Islington ask of Door and Richard in exchange for helping them?

Answer: Get a key from the Black Friars

Because Lord Portico's diary says that Door should trust the angel Islington, she goes to him (her?) for help.

Door and Richard do visit Earl's Court, but not at the angel's request. In fact, it's the other way around. They visit the Earl to find out how to locate the angel Islington.

Richard and Door find the angel by going through the Angelus at the museum, but not before Richard runs into his ex-fiancee there.

Door asks the angel for help finding out who is behind the killing of her family. Richard asks to be returned to his former life Above. The angel says he (she?) will help them if they go to the Black Friars and bring him back the key that is in their keeping.

Door, Richard and Hunter manage to successfully pass all three challenges at the Black Friars and are given the key.
7. Who turns out to be the mastermind behind the murder of Door's family and the plot to kill her?

Answer: The Angel Islington

Surprisingly, the angel is revealed as the "bad guy" in Chapter 13. Here we learn that Islington is the one who has hired Croup and Vandemar to kill Door and her family.

Door and Richard don't find out until Chapter 17, when they return to the angel with the key they have won from the Black Friars. Here, Islington reveals that he doctored Lord Portico's diary to make it appear to Door as if he were the savior rather than the murderer. It turns out that the key is actually to Islington's prison and it was being safeguarded by the monks to prevent Islington from escaping. Islington can now leave his prison, but he still needs Door to find and open the door that will take him home (a.k.a. Heaven).

The Marquis was suspected to be the "traitor in the midst" that Door was warned about, but he's revealed to be quite loyal in the end. The traitor turns out to be Hunter. However, Hunter is not the mastermind of the plot: she betrayed Door in exchange for a special spear for use in her quest to kill the Beast.

Serpentine, although scary, is a former employer of Hunter and treats Door and her companions with kindness and hospitality.
8. The two floating markets are held where?

Answer: Harrod's and HMS Belfast

Richard's first floating market is held at Harrod's in the middle of the night. To get there, he has to cross the dark, scary and dangerous Night's Bridge with Hunter and with Anaesthesia the Rat-Talker. Unfortunately Anaesthesia does not make it across the bridge.

Richard's second floating market (which he attends with Door and Hunter) is held on the HMS Belfast, a decommissioned gunship moored on the River Thames. At this market, he hires Lamia to accompany them as a guide. They are supposed to meet up with the Marquis, but that doesn't quite go as planned.
9. Who strikes the final blow that finishes off the Beast?

Answer: Richard

The Beast is an ancient creature who lives in a labyrinth in the depths of London Below. Hunter has dreamed of hunting the Beast for a long time. So eager is she to fight the Beast that she betrays Door in exchange for a spear.

Unfortunately for Hunter, the Beast mortally wounds her and runs off. The dying Hunter gives Richard her spear and tells him what he must do to kill the Beast. The next time the Beast comes around, Hunter distracts the Beast and stabs it with her knife while Richard finishes it off with the spear.

Richard is henceforth known as a hero in London Below.
10. In the final chapter, Richard returns to his old life in London Above. How does Richard's story end?

Answer: He decides to return to London Below, and the Marquis comes to get him.

At first, things are going well for Richard. He gets a promotion at work, he moves into a penthouse apartment, Jessica returns his ring and tells him that she wishes they would get back together.

But Richard soon gets bored with the routine of his life. One night he goes out with Gary and some other co-workers (including a girl from Computer Services whom another co-worker is trying to push on him).

Richard has a long talk with Gary where he tells him everything. Gary doesn't believe it and thinks Richard needs to see a therapist. Gary goes home, leaving Richard to wander the streets.

Richard scares a homeless woman with his vehement talk about London Below. Then he carves the shape of a door on a brick wall and calls for Door. Suddenly it turns into a real door. The book ends with the Marquis appearing in the doorway and telling Richard to come with him.
