The story of Noah and the swan is one of the sub-plots to the novel, Nicholas Sparks said he chose a swan after a chapter in 'The Notebook' titled 'Swans and Storms'.

Noah had tripped over a root on his way back to his room. He claimed the swan stayed with him throughout the whole ordeal, further proving to him that the swan was his wife Allie.
He gave his book of poems, which he had read with Allie in their marriage, to Jane and Wilson when he was recovering in the hospital because he claimed he wanted it to be read and not be kept in his and Allie's memory.

Their anniversary was on the Saturday, but as that was the date Anna had set her wedding for, they celebrated early. Wilson laid out a dress for her and set out notes instructing her what to do next. She ended up at Noah's house where Wilson was waiting with a romantic meal and an album full of photos of the couple.
