Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of the movie, Jacob gives Bella a gift for her birthday that he doesn't in the book. What is his present?

Answer: A dreamcatcher

Dream catchers are generally associated with Native American culture, specifically the Ojibwa tribe, one of the largest group of Native Americans in North America. In their language, a dream catcher is called "asabikeshiinh," the inanimate form of the word for "spider" or "bawaajige nagwaagan" meaning "dream snare," according to wikipedia. Dream catchers are meant to ensnare bad dreams in their webs until the morning sun shines on them, destroying them. Good dreams, of course, are allowed to pass through freely.

It was a thoughtful gesture, but given Bella's screaming nightmares, it seems that it wasn't too effective!
2. In the book, Bella and Edward watch this movie together at her house. In the movie, they watch it while in class. What is the movie?

Answer: Romeo and Juliet

A clear parallel to Edward and Bella's story, "Romeo and Juliet" is William Shakespeare's tale of star crossed lovers who are kept apart by their circumstances. Juliet fakes her death to be with Romeo, but, as usual in one of Shakespeare's plays, things go wrong and Romeo comes to believe that Juliet is really dead. Having no will to live without her, he goes to where she is entombed and kills himself with poison. Tragically, just as Romeo is dying, Juliet awakens from her death-like slumber, too late to save him. Upon realizing Romeo is now dead, Juliet kills herself with a dagger. The play ends here, with the famous lines "For never was a story of more woe / Than this of Juliet and her Romeo."

Thankfully for Bella and Edward, Bella IS in time to stop Edward from bringing about his own death (maybe Edward will reconsider his envy of the ease with which Romeo could commit suicide!) and so they have a much happier ending.

Meyer has revealed in an interview that each of the books is inspired by a work of literature: "Twilight" by Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice"; "New Moon" by Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet"; "Eclipse" by Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights"; and "Breaking Dawn" by Shakespeare's "A Midsummer's Night Dream." If you haven't already, I'd recommend reading all of the originals too! "Wuthering Heights" was even re-released with a special "Twilight"-inspired cover.
3. In the book, Bella hears Edward's voice when she does something reckless. In the movie, what other figment accompanies his voice?

Answer: She can see him

In the book, Bella just hears a disembodied voice, but in the movie Edward's face also appears. I suppose with all the love for Robert Pattinson, who plays Edward, the filmmakers figured it couldn't hurt to squeeze in some more scenes with his face in them!

Despite his excellent American accent, Pattinson is actually English. If you want to hear what he sounds like in his native accent, check out "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" where he plays the role of Cedric Diggory.
4. In the book, Bella hops on a motorcycle with a random stranger in front of a bar while out with Jessica.

Answer: False

In the book, Bella merely approaches the group of men; she does not actually get on the bike. Movie Bella is apparently even crazier than Book Bella. Didn't Renee ever tell her, not to get in a car (or on a motorcycle) with strangers!
5. In the movie, Bella tells Jake that she no longer likes this pastime. In the book, it's something that Jake figures out on his own and tells Mike about on their way to a movie.

Answer: Music

It's somewhat ironic that Bella loses interest in music, as music is something that the author, Stephenie Meyer, is very passionate about. Meyer has explained that she writes all of her books while listening to music and has even composed playlists to listen to while reading the books. You can find the playlist for "New Moon" and all of her other books on her website, and she even indicates from which character's perspective you should listen to the song.
6. Movie Bella seems to spend most of her spare time moping around, but Book Bella at least has a part-time job. Where does she work?

Answer: Newton's

Bizarre though it may be, Bella works at the an outdoors outfitters sort of place, owned by Mike Newton's family. In the book, this is how she learns about the bear attacks, and not through Charlie, as she does in the movie.

Although many of the locations described in Meyer's books are actual places in Forks, Washington (that can be visited on "Twilight tours" that take you to these destinations), Newton's is a fictionalized business.
7. In what is possibly the most awkward quasi-date situation in history, Bella ends up going to a movie with only Mike and Jacob after several of their friends cancel at the last minute. In the book, they see __________ and in the movie, they see ______________.

Answer: Crosshairs/Face Punch

Determined to avoid romantic comedies that could remind her of Edward, Bella chooses an action film. The evening is cut short when Mike gets sick, and Jacob also begins to feel unwell (we later learn he is about to turn into a werewolf for the first time).

I thought maybe the filmmakers had changed the name because a movie called "Crosshairs" already existed, but after a quick google search, nothing came up so perhaps they just thought "Face Punch" was a more amusing name - I know I do!
8. In the movie, we only know that Edward plans to provoke the Volturi's wrath by stepping out into the sun in daylight, exposing himself as a supernatural being. The book version of Edward is a bit more creative, going through several options that Alice can foresee, before finally settling on one. Which method of exposing his secret does Edward NOT contemplate in the book?

Answer: Chopping off his hand and letting it grow back

Out of character thought it may be, Alice informs Bella that for a while Edward had decided to go on a killing spree in Volterra. Bella speculates that he ultimately decided against it because he wouldn't want to disappoint Carlisle. Thanks to his flair for the dramatic though, Edward waits for exactly twelve noon, which gives Bella enough time to stop him.

Volterra is actually a real place in the Tuscany region of Italy, but most of the backstory of the town appears to have been made up by Stephenie Meyer, including the St. Marcus day celebration. The town, however, has been connected with Etruscan mythology which could provide the basis for a vampire legend.
9. In the movie, Edward learns of Bella's alleged demise solely from his phone call to Bella's house, but in the book, which of his siblings gives him the news?

Answer: Rosalie

Once again, Rosalie is the one who poses a challenge to Bella and Edward. This time she does at least offer a fairly heartfelt apology and thanks Bella for being brave enough to go save her brother. Her full backstory gets more attention in the last two books of the "Twilight" series, but for the first two books/movies, she generally comes across as a pretty miserable person.
10. In both the movie and the book, Bella flings herself at Edward to stop him from stepping into the sun in Volterra. In the movie, what word does Edward whisper after Bella is in his arms?

Answer: Heaven

In the book, Edward says "Amazing, Carlisle was right," while in the movie he merely whispers "Heaven." Either way, as Bella points out, it means somewhere deep down he must still hope or believe that he still has a soul. The idea of whether a vampire has a soul or not is one that comes up in a lot of vampire literature, including Anne Rice's vampire novels, which I would also highly recommend to those who enjoy the "Twilight" saga.
