Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The game of Snakes and Foxes is a 'real world' version of the relationship between humankind and the Aelfinn and Eelfinn. Which are the Aelfinn: Snakes or Foxes?

Answer: Snakes

The information on which is which finally comes to us from Mat's point of view in "Winter's Heart". Up until then, it was only speculation.
2. According to Mat in "Lord of Chaos", the only way to win at the game of Snakes and Foxes is to cheat.

Answer: True

We learn this fact in the series from two sources. When Olver is playing the board game, it is mentioned that the only way to win is to cheat. We also learn of it through the conversation between Birgitte and Perrin while in Tel'aran'rhoid.

When the game was originally introduced in "Lord of Chaos", young Olver was annoyed that the game purportedly could not be won without cheating. However, in the epilogue to "Towers of Midnight", he actually manages to win the game. Also, when Mat enters the realm of the Aelfinn and Eelfinn, he manages to escape without resorting to cheating... it is his luck that allows him to bend chance and 'win'.
3. The realm of the Aelfinn and Eelfinn is accessible through two redstone doorways with twisted frames that seem to be impossible. When they are found, where are they?

Answer: Tear and Rhuidean

The High Lords of Tear feared anything that was related to the One Power, and stored any artifacts found in a large room in the Stone of Tear. The door in Rhuidean was brought there with the Jenn Aiel when they settled and built the city in the Three-Fold Land.

The Aiel were entrusted with the doorframe and many other items dealing with the One Power by the Aes Sedai during the War of Power.
4. The doorframe in Tear was once in the possession of the rulers of this country, who used it to prevent Tear from taking them over for centuries.

Answer: Mayene

The Firsts of Mayene flourished as a small nation, even with the everpresent threat of being conquered by the much larger nation of Tear. This doorway goes to the Aelfinn (Snakes) and they answer three questions (according to the agreement). The Eelfinn (Foxes) through the Rhuidean doorway will grant three wishes (for a price).
5. Objects that are associated with the One Power are known by different names depending on their use. The doorways into the world of the 'Finn is of which kind?

Answer: Ter'angreal

Ter'angreal are made with the One Power and can often be used without having to utilize the One Power. The doorframe is one such, where anyone can use it. Angreal will enhance and increase the capacity of one using the One Power - these are specific to the male and female halves of the True Source. Sa'angreal will magnify and multiply the power of the user along the same lines as Angreal do.
6. Apart from the redstone doorframes, there is no other way to enter the world of the Aelfinn and Eelfinn.

Answer: False

While hunting and being hunted by Slayer in Tel'aran'rhoid, Perrin chases him to a metallic tower without any apparent entrance, into which Slayer passes. Perrin is about to follow, when he is warned away by Birgitte, who explains that it is the entrance to the world of the 'Finn, and that it is next to impossible to escape from it once inside. The tower is called the Tower of Ghenjei.
7. According to the treaty made by the makers of the doorframes and the 'Finn, there are three things which supplicants are not allowed to bring when bringing their questions/wishes. Which of the following is not one of them?

Answer: Weapons

These restrictions are spoken of in the encounters we witness in "The Shadow Rising" as well as in the game of Snakes and Foxes. The rhyme that accompanies the game is "Courage to strengthen, fire to blind, music to daze, iron to bind." Thus, only way to win is to break the agreement (cheat).
8. Just as gamepieces can be snared in the game of Snakes and Foxes, so can people be snared in the world of the 'Finn. Moiraine Sedai and Lanfear went through the doorframe from Rhuidean into the land of the Eelfinn, and it melted behind them. In later novels we learn that Lanfear has been recycled by the Dark One into a new incarnation. She speaks of having been "held" by the Aelfinn and the Eelfinn. What is Lanfear's new name in her present incarnation?

Answer: Cyndane

There is still much speculation on the situation of Moiraine. Speculation has it that a rescue attempt will be made, led by Thom Merrilin (music to daze), and including perhaps Aludra (fire to blind), and someone like Mat or Juilin (courage to strengthen and iron to bind). I think Olver will have a hand in things (Gaidal Cain reborn?)
9. When Mat is in the land of the Aelfinn, he asks his three questions and is not satisfied with the answers. 1 - He must go to Rhuidean. 2 - or he will die. 3 - because he will be killed by those who do not want him to fulfill his fate. Mat demands to know what fate. In their haste to have him leave, they give him the answer to that demand. Which of the following was not one of the responses?

Answer: To sound the Horn of Valere at the Last Battle

On two separate occasions since that foretelling, Mat has been in a situation where it could be said that he died and lived again. Once, after his encounter with the Eelfinn, and again in the attack on Rahvin in Caemlyn. He lives a part of what was through his memories of past military leaders. Lastly (as of book 10), he is in the company of Tuon, the Daughter of the Nine Moons. What was foretold is slowly, but surely coming to pass.
10. When telling Nynaeve, Egwene and Elayne about the history of the redstone doorframe in Tear, Moiraine Sedai also explains some additional rules and cautions. Which of the following is not one of them?

Answer: You must not enter the doorframe when there is anybody else within

While Moiraine does not warn against multiple numbers of people being within the Aelfinn realm at the same time, there is a problem when she, Mat and Rand are all inside together. Moiraine attributes the instability of the situation to the simultaneous presence of two ta'veren. Interestingly, while they are all there at the same time, they don't see each other there.
