Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The narrator of this book takes a bus ride from hell to heaven.

Answer: The Great Divorce

In this book, Lewis dreams that he took a bus ride from hell to heaven.
Heaven, in this book, is described as a place where everything is more real than on Earth -- Lewis could walk without bending the grass because he was insubstantial. There he meets George McDonald, one of his literary and Christian mentors.
2. This was Lewis's last novel. It is set in Glome, a country near Greece, and is a retelling of the myth of Psyche and Eros.

Answer: Till We Have Faces

Queen Orual of Glome is Psyche's sister, and tells the story from her point of view.
3. Doctor Elwin Ransom is kidnapped and taken to Mars in this the first book of Lewis's "Space Trilogy".

Answer: Out of the Silent Planet

The canals of Mars are inhabited, though the planet's surface is deserted. Lewis acknowledged his debt to H. G. Wells and other science fiction writers of the time in providing some of the tone and style of this book.
4. A senior temptor writes advice to his nephew on how best to ensure the soul's damnation.

Answer: The Screwtape Letters

Lewis wrote that this was the hardest of his books to write.
5. Dr. Ransom, recently back from his trip to Mars, now travels to Venus, where he finds wonderful floating islands and exotic creatures.

Answer: Perelandra

"Out of the Silent Planet" is the first of the trilogy, and "That Hideous Strength" is the third book.

Perelandra is a world which hasn't fallen into sin and decay yet. Ransom has to struggle to keep it from falling.
6. This allegorical story is set in the Landlord's country. The narrator must leave his home and proceed to the Landlord's home.

Answer: The Pilgrim's Regress

Not my favorite of the Lewis works, it's somewhat lacking his sharp wit.
7. The last book of the "Space Trilogy", this takes place on Earth, where Dr. Ransom and his companions battle the N.I.C.E.

Answer: That Hideous Strength

Merlin, the magician of the Arthur legends, is brought out of his long sleep, and becomes the agent of the N.I.C.E's defeat. The bad guys get their just deserts.
8. Besides his works of fiction, Lewis wrote literary criticism, theological speculations and essays. In this collection of essays, he lays out his reasons for his Christian faith.

Answer: Mere Christianity

This may be Lewis's best known work outside of the "Chronicles of Narnia".
9. This is Lewis's autobiography.

Answer: Surprised by Joy

Interestingly enough, Lewis wrote this before he married Joy Davidman.
One could say he really was surprised by Joy!
10. In this book, Lewis argues that supernatural events happen, and should be expected to happen in our world, though we are sometimes prevented by our preconceptions from seeing them.

Answer: Miracles

This is one of several of Lewis' writings which are directed at specific
problems or areas of Christianity; "The Problem of Pain" and "The Four
Loves" are two others.
