"Salem's Lot" by Stephen King was published in 1975. It was his second book. It is the story of a man returning to his home town after several years, only to find it becoming over-run with vampires. He and the local priest eventually escape but return a year later and destroy the town by fire. By then everyone in it has been turned into a vampire so this is the only way to kill them all.

Written in 1954, this book popularised the disease-killing-the-world theme. In it, due to an infection, everyone has been turned into something that resembles a cross between a vampire and a zombie. The hero spends his nights withstanding a siege from the infected people who want to kill him, and his days hunting them down and looking for a cure.

The book has had three film adaptations: "The Last Man On Earth"(1964), "The Omega Man"(1971) and "I Am Legend"(2007).

Published in 1951, "The Day of The Triffids" remains John Wyndham's best known work. Triffids are engineered plants that appear to have a limited degree of intelligence. They can move around, and have a sting that kills their prey, which they then eat.

Despite this, they are widely cultivated because they yield a superior vegetable oil. The book relates the events that happen after a freak meteor shower blinds most people, leaving them at the mercy of the plants.

"Harvest Home" by Thomas Tryon was published in 1973. An artist and his family decide to escape the New York rat race and relocate to an idyllic village. They soon discover that all is not as it seems. The village follows certain old rituals and ways, especially in agriculture.

The society is matriarchal, and the artist soon realises that the women of the village want his wife and daughter as they will bring new bloodlines into the community.

Published in 1902, "The Hound of the Baskervilles" has been adapted for film, television and radio not only in the UK but also in Germany, Australia, Canada and the USA.
