"Salem's Lot" by Stephen King was published in 1975. It was his second book. It is the story of a man returning to his home town after several years, only to find it becoming over-run with vampires. He and the local priest eventually escape but return a year later and destroy the town by fire. By then everyone in it has been turned into a vampire so this is the only way to kill them all.

Written in 1954, this book popularised the disease-killing-the-world theme. In it, due to an infection, everyone has been turned into something that resembles a cross between a vampire and a zombie. Published in 1951, "The Day of The Triffids" remains John Wyndham's best known work. Triffids are engineered plants that appear to have a limited degree of intelligence. They can move around, and have a sting that kills their prey, which they then eat.

Despite this, they are widely cultivated because they yield a superior vegetable oil. The book relates the events that happen after a freak meteor shower blinds most people, leaving them at the mercy of the plants.

The "Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter" series of books by Laurel K. Hamilton have Anita romantically involved with the very creatures she is licensed to kill. As the series progresses she becomes less and less human, gaining powers from her various supernatural lovers.

Elena Michaels was turned into a werewolf against her will. Being the only known female werewolf makes her very valuable to the pack, but, against their wishes, she insists on living as a human and leading her own life. When rogue werewolves start killing pack members, the pack leader asks her to return home to help. "Bitten" is author Kelly Armstrong's first book.

The evil housekeeper, Mrs Danvers, undermines the new Mrs De Winter at every opportunity, and even tries to persuade her to kill herself. Her husband is hiding his own dark secret, and it all comes to a suitably melodramatic climax.

Bram Stoker's "Dracula" is probably the most famous vampire book ever written. There were many early film adaptations, which in turn led to the Hammer House of Horror "Dracula" films, starring Christopher Lee as Dracula. In the book Dracula comes to England by ship and comes ashore at Whitby.

"Harvest Home" by Thomas Tryon was published in 1973. An artist and his family decide to escape the New York rat race and relocate to an idyllic village. They soon discover that all is not as it seems. The village follows certain old rituals and ways, especially in agriculture.

The society is matriarchal, and the artist soon realises that the women of the village want his wife and daughter as they will bring new bloodlines into the community.

Answer: The Hound of the Baskervilles

The Baskerville family are under a curse: the eldest male will be killed by a black hellhound. Sherlock Holmes is called in to investigate, and to try and keep the latest Baskerville heir, Sir Henry, safe.

Published in 1902, "The Hound of the Baskervilles" has been adapted for film, television and radio not only in the UK but also in Germany, Australia, Canada and the USA.
