The novel was originally published in 1847, and tells the story of Jane, who is an orphan. She becomes a governess at Thornfield Hall where she falls in love with her employer. Having discovered that Rochester is already married, Jane runs away only to be drawn back to the Hall. The mad wife has been killed in a fire which maimed and blinded Rochester, leaving him free to marry Jane.
2. Jane Austen writes about her heroine marrying Mr. Knightly in which of her novels?

Answer: Emma

Emma Woodhouse believes herself to be a supreme matchmaker, but nearly misses out on her own perfect partner. The book was filmed in 1996 with Gwyneth Paltrow playing the part of Emma. It has also been adapted for television, for ITV in 1996 starring Kate Beckinsale and in 2009 for BBC with Romola Garai in the title role.
3. In the final 'Harry Potter' book, 'The Deathly Hallows', we discover that Harry marries which other character?

The novel was written in 1908 and exposes the class distinctions prevalent at the time. Lucy meets George while on holiday in Florence, Italy, but he is not her social equal. Although they kiss, she has to move on to Rome without being able to say goodbye. Back in England, Lucy becomes engaged to the more sophisticated Cecil Vyse, but realises that she loves George and elopes with him back to Florence.
5. Although she might have done 'far better', Lucie Manette marries Charles Darnay in which Dickens novel?

Answer: A Tale of Two Cities

Set in the time of the French Revolution, the two cities are London and Paris. Charles Darnay is an aristocrat, sentenced to die on the guillotine by the revolutionaries. An English barrister, Sydney Carton, who looks like Darnay takes Darnay's place in prison and sacrifices his life for the sake of Lucie, with whom he is in love.

The last line of the novel is spoken by Carton and begins 'it is a far, far better thing that I do'.
6. Bathsheba Everdene is one of Thomas Hardy's heroines. She is romantically involved with three of the following men. Who is the odd one out?

Answer: Michael Henchard

Bathsheba Everdene is the protagonist of 'Far From the Madding Crowd'. Gabriel Oak proposes marriage to her early in the novel, but she turns him down. She later marries Francis Troy, who does not love her, and disappears after the death of his true love and their child. Bathsheba agrees to marry William Boldwood after Troy is legally declared dead, but Troy reappears only to be shot dead by Boldwood in a jealous rage.

She eventually comes to realise that Oak is the only man who has been steadfast and they marry. Michael Henchard is the eponymous 'Mayor of Casterbridge', also by Thomas Hardy.
7. Miranda and Ferdinand fall in love during which play by Shakespeare?

Answer: The Tempest

Miranda and her father, Prospero, have been living on an island for many years as Prospero has been deposed as Duke of Milan by his brother. A shipwreck brings Ferdinand, and others, to the island where he and Miranda meet and fall in love. Eventually, everyone is allowed to leave the island and the happy couple will marry as soon as they arrive back in Italy. 'Much Ado About Nothing' features Beatrice and Benedick.

There is a Fernando in 'Love's Labour's Lost', who falls for an unnamed Princess of France but there is no wedding. 'Measure for Measure' has Isabella and Vincentio as its couple.

Sam marries Rose Cotton soon after he and Frodo return to Hobbiton after the destruction of the ring. They have six daughters and seven sons together. Daisy, May and Marigold are all sisters to Sam, and one of his daughters is also named Daisy.

Hindley is Catherine's brother and Hareton's father. Hareton has been raised by Heathcliff and has received no education, another part of Heathcliff's revenge on the Earnshaw family.

After Linton's death, Cathy helps Hareton to educate himself and they fall in love. At the end of the novel, Heathcliff having died, they are planning to marry.
10. The love story of Lorna Doone and John Ridd is told in the novel bearing her name. Who is the author?

Answer: R D Blackmore

Subtitled 'A Romance of Exmoor', the novel was originally published in 1869. Farmer John Ridd falls in love with Lorna Doone, who is part of a family of outlaws and destined to marry the heir of the patriarch of the Doone clan. Lorna turns out to be the long lost daughter of an aristocratic family and is taken to London. John manages to acquire a title, through service to Lorna's guardian and they are free to marry. Lorna survives being shot at her wedding by her thwarted lover and the couple are able to begin their married life.

The other authors are all contemporaries of Blackmore.
