Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the outset of 'Dead Souls', Detective Inspector John Rebus was performing undercover duties at one of Edinburgh's top tourist attractions. Which one?

Answer: The zoo

Rebus and other officers were trying to catch someone who was poisoning the animals. The long vigil turned into a chase when Rebus spotted a criminal face from the past and it ended with both men in the sea lions' pool. While Rebus was distracted with an innocent man, the real poisoner struck.
2. What did John Rebus find odd about the photographs on the desk of Chief Superintendent Watson, his boss?

Answer: They all faced away from Watson

The photographs showed Watson's children and grandchildren at increasing ages. They were gifts passed on to Watson and he felt it necessary to display them. Rebus felt the intention was to show Watson as a man of rectitude who had achieved something in his life. They had little humanising effect, Rebus thought; rather they had all the ease of crime exhibits.
3. In 'Dead Souls', D/Insp John Rebus attended the funeral of a colleague. How had he died?

Answer: He committed suicide

Jim Margolies had seemed to have it all, Rebus thought, promising career, handsome family and lots of friends. No one knew why he threw himself to his death from Salisbury Crags. His wife had convinced herself he had not jumped, but had stumbled and fallen.
4. In 'Dead Souls', an old school friend contacted John Rebus when his son went missing. Rebus remembered Brian Mee; at school he had been given a nickname after a cartoon character. Which one?

Answer: Barney, from "The Flintstones"

Rebus remembered Mee as a useful footballer with prominent teeth, a freckled nose and a kitchen-stool haircut. Now grown but still living in Fife, his son Damon had gone missing from an Edinburgh nightclub. Because he was 19 and therefore able to make his own decisions, the police, officially, did not seem interested. Rebus agreed to make some enquiries.
5. At the end of a long jail term, a convicted killer was deported from the USA to Edinburgh and crossed John Rebus's path. How many murders had Cary Oakes committed?

Answer: Six

Oakes had kept himself fit, and knowledgeable about the outside world during his 15 years in jail. The authorities had pinned two murders on him. He told his lawyer it was "six actually. But who's counting"? When told he was being deported to Edinburgh, Oakes was not too worried; he had unfinished business there.
6. In 'Dead Souls', D/I John Rebus attended court prepared to give evidence against two men. What crimes were they accused of?

Answer: Child abuse

The men had been employed at a church-run children's home. It had operated from the 1930s and over the years stories of physical, mental, and sexual abuse had emerged. A survivors' group had succeeded in highlighting the issues and securing a police investigation. Two former staff members faced charges ranging from assault to sodomy. Rebus's involvement in the case had been minimal and he could not understand why he had been called. In the witness box he found out why - when he was ambushed by the defence lawyer over his antics at the zoo.
7. When Carey Oakes returned to Edinburgh after his jail term in the USA, D/I John Rebus watched while his bag was searched by a customs official. Which two paperback books were among his possessions?

Answer: A Bible and a dictionary

Rebus noted that both looked well-used. Oakes was signed up by a journalist, Jim Stevens, for an exclusive interview. He told Stevens: "Bible'll teach you a lot of things. I got my first taste in prison. Time was, I'd no time for the Good Book."
8. What was the name of a policeman that the killer Cary Oakes was keen to trace on his return to Edinburgh?

Answer: Alan Archibald

Archibald was a detective, since retired. Seventeen years before, he had been acquainted with an investigation in Edinburgh into the death of a teenage girl. It had the hallmarks of Oakes's work and Archibald had communicated with the killer, probably hoping he would confess to killing the girl.

They met on the killer's return to Edinburgh. Archibald had a personal link to the Edinburgh killing. To find out what that was, you'll have to read the book.
9. In 'Dead Souls', D/I John Rebus took his enquiries about a missing youth to a boat that was used as a licensed club. On speaking to the owner, Billy Preston, Rebus remembered that a namesake had played with a pop 1960s pop group. Which pop group?

Answer: The Beatles

The Beatles were, of course, a guitar band, but Billy Preston played keyboards on their recordings. Preston also played with the Rolling Stones.
10. While on the trail of a missing youth in 'Dead Souls', D/I John Rebus made enquiries about Amanda Petrie, a woman who hired a boat for wild drinking parties. She was the daughter of a prominent local figure. What was his profession?

Answer: Judge

Amanda Petrie was the daughter of Lord Justice Petrie. She ran with a wild, and rich crowd. Many of the parties she organised had a fancy dress theme, and they were loud and disruptive. She was close to her brother, who frequently also attended the parties.
11. As 'Dead Souls' progressed, D/I John Rebus allowed his hatred of a criminal to overcome his professional ethics and he leaked details of the man to the Press. Who was that criminal?

Answer: Darren Rough

Rough was a convicted child abuser who had himself been abused as a child. Police had wanted him handy to give evidence against two child home employees.
Rebus had struggled with Rough at the zoo and had leaked his whereabouts to the Press. A lynch mob gathered at Rough's apartment, to be dispersed by Rebus, among others. Initially Rebus had been repulsed by what Rough had been, but he eventually felt sorry for the young man and helped him.
12. In 'Dead Souls', D/I John Rebus was dismayed when evidence seemed to suggest a personal friend was implicated in a scandal. What was that friend's profession?

Answer: Priest

Fr Conor Leary was a confidante, if not quite a confessor, of Rebus. He heard an allegation that Leary had visited a children's home where the young boys had been abused. One boy suggested that an abuser had worn a priest's clothing.
13. In 'Dead Souls', D/I John Rebus visited a hotel where a function for 'our little angels' was taking place. What was it all about?

Answer: A beauty contest for pre-teen girls

The girls and their mothers - probably more so the mothers - took it all very seriously. "It's like a dog show," Rebus's companion whispered to him. Rebus noted make-up applied to faces not ready for it; it made the girls look like clowns. Among the girls was the daughter of the dead detective.
14. In 'Dead Souls', Detective Inspector John Rebus spent time looking for a missing teenager, the son of friends. It transpired he had once had 'a thing' for the mother, Janice. At Rebus's flat she discovered a record album she had written on all those years ago. Which band recorded the album?

Answer: The Rolling Stones

Visiting Rebus's flat, Janice found where she had written 'JLJ' - Janice Loves Johnny - on the sleeve many years before. Rebus had not been pleased.
15. In 'Dead Souls', John Rebus returned to his hometown and stayed with old school friends. He feared that someone would try to interfere with them. Instead, he found that his father's grave had been vandalised. Who did it?

Answer: Cary Oakes

Cary Oakes, the ex-jailbird killer, had shown an obsession with John Rebus. He visited Rebus's flat and burgled that of Rebus's lover. Oakes also visited the town where Rebus had been brought up. Rebus had half-expected that, but thought Oates would have gone after his school friends.
16. In 'Dead Souls', D/Insp John Rebus drove out of Edinburgh with a retired detective and a serial killer to look at the spot where the body of a teenage girl had been found 17 years before. Where was their destination?

Answer: The Pentland Hills

The retired detective, Alan Archibald, was convinced that the killer, Cary Oakes, had murdered the girl. Oakes was playing games with the detectives and had more murder in mind. His plans, though, were foiled, and he had to make a run for it to escape from the police.
17. Cary Oakes had "a date with destiny" in 'Dead Souls'. The serial killer had returned to Edinburgh to kill again. Where did he locate his intended victim?

Answer: An old folks' home

Oakes blamed his uncle for making him what he was, a psychopath. His uncle, though, claimed Oakes was already a bad one when he first arrived to live with him as a boy. He had used violence on Oakes, to no avail. When he had heard Oakes had been arrested in America, his view was that he should have been sent to the electric chair. John Rebus's view was that the uncle, now in an old folks' home, had been, and remained, rotten to the core.
18. In 'Dead Souls', D/I John Rebus found a link between the death of a detective and abuse at a children's home. What was that link?

Answer: A relative of the detective was implicated in the abuse

Dr Joseph Margolies was the father of the detective. Part of his duties as a GP had been to look after the health and welfare of the boys. He had ignored their complaints of abuse and had abused Darren Rough.
19. In 'Dead Souls', John Rebus had a violent showdown with a serial killer in which both ended up injured. The killer had used a folding knife; what weapon had Rebus used?

Answer: A carving knife

Cary Oakes had escaped from the police hunt on the Pentland Hills. He had broken into Rebus's flat and stolen his phones. He then taunted Rebus to following him through the streets of Edinburgh. When they fought, Oakes cut Rebus with a knife, but Rebus propelled him into the path of a speeding car and he was knocked down.
20. Tying up loose ends was important to John Rebus. In 'Dead Souls' he had helped a childhood friend whose son had disappeared. What had happened to Damon Mee?

Answer: He had been knocked into the water after a fight on a boat

Damon Mee had gone to a nightclub in Edinburgh with friends. There an attractive looking blonde woman picked him up. They had gone to a party on a boat where, to his horror, Damon found the blonde was a man in drag. On deck he had started to attack the blonde, but was struck over the head and knocked into the harbour by the blonde's sister.
