Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 'The Hanging Garden', Detective Inspector John Rebus was given the task of investigating an old crime. What was it?

Answer: A Nazi massacre of French villagers

Rebus interviewed a man called Joseph Lintz, a respected university lecturer. It was alleged he had been part of an SS unit that had massacred men, women and children in a French village in WW2. He admitted he had been in the SS, but denied involvement in the massacre. Lintz was, though, vague about his early life, or how he had come to live in Scotland.
2. It seemed to D/I John Rebus that every relationship he had turned sour. Just when he was trying to mend fences with his daughter, she ended up in hospital seriously injured. What, in the book 'The Hanging Garden', had happened to her?

Answer: She was the victim of a hit-and-run car crash

Sammy Rebus worked for a charity that sought to help ex-offenders readjust to life outside jail. After enjoying a rare meal out with her father, she left to go home but was knocked down by a speeding car. Rebus suspected it had been deliberate as a warning message to him.
3. Detective Inspector John Rebus gained a new admirer in 'The Hanging Garden'. She maintained that he owned her. What was her name?

Answer: Candice

'Candice' was from Sarajevo and spoke little English. She had been brought to Edinburgh to work as a prostitute. She tried to kill herself when arrested, and Rebus saved her life.
4. After saving the life of a prostitute in 'The Hanging Garden', Detective Inspector John Rebus discovered that she had been put 'on the game' by a criminal mastermind he was keen to put in jail. Who was that criminal?

Answer: Tommy Telford

In fact 'Big Ger' was still in jail, having been put there by Rebus. However, Telford, who had cut his criminal teeth in Paisley, was intent on muscling in on Cafferty's territory. Protection rackets and prostitution were just two strands to Telford's bow.
5. In 'The Hanging Garden', D/I John Rebus discovered that a leading criminal was acting as a go-between with a group of Japanese businessmen to acquire an Edinburgh leisure facility. Which one?

Answer: Poyntinghame Golf and Country Club

The Japanese were, in fact, representing criminal gangs in their own country and were anxious to use the club as a means of laundering money.
6. In 'The Hanging Garden', D/I John Rebus made a trip to Newcastle and ended up speaking to a local mobster. What was his nickname?

Answer: Mr Pink Eyes

Jake Tarawicz had a lot of Eastern European connections and was suspected of involvement in a number of criminal enterprises. He was also allied to an Edinburgh gangster. His nickname reflected his appearance and related to a skin condition.
7. John Rebus paid a visit in 'The Hanging Garden' to a friend who was a priest. He declined an alcoholic drink but what did the Irish priest pour for himself?

Answer: A pint of Guinness

Fr Conor Leary was a sometime friend and confidante of Rebus, if not a de facto confessor. Rebus struggled with religion. He wanted to believe and visited various churches to find the 'right one'.
8. The investigation being carried out by D/I John Rebus in 'The Hanging Garden' took a new twist when a suspect was found dead. Where was the body found?

Answer: Warriston cemetery

Josef Lintz was found hanging from a tree in the cemetery. He had liked to go there to tidy graves and plant flowers. It looked like suicide, but Rebus suspected foul play. Rebus found himself between two opposing forces in his investigation: an organisation that wanted to bring ex-Nazi war criminals to justice, and Special Branch, which preferred that the secrets the men carried remained secret.
9. Smuggling drugs was a lucrative business for Edinburgh gangsters. In 'The Hanging Garden', which particular type of people was one gangland boss using as 'mules'?

Answer: Pensioners

The pensioners were being used to bring drugs in from continental Europe. They were offered trips abroad by the gang boss, and the drugs were slipped into their luggage abroad. They then flew back from the continent on interconnecting flights through London Heathrow to Inverness. The criminals relied on the fact that the luggage was not checked by customs at Heathrow.
10. In a bid to thwart a robbery at a factory, D/I John Rebus planted a police colleague in the workforce to gain information. What was that colleague's name?

Answer: Jack Morton

Jack Morton was the man who had got Rebus off booze and on the wagon. With the cooperation of the factory management, he was given a job as a security guard, but posed as a loser who needed money and allowed himself to be recruited by the would-be robbers. Morton was then able to tip Rebus off about the timetable for the robbery and police surrounded the factory. Things went wrong and someone died. If you want to know who that was; read the book. If you want to know if Rebus got his man; read the book.
