Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Camilla, the heroine, is sitting writing letters in a Greek cafe when, in a case of mistaken identity, she is approached to drive a car to Delphi. To whom is she asked to deliver the car?

Answer: Monsieur Simon

Camilla ends up accepting the keys of the car in a language mix up. She mistakenly says "ne", thinking this means no! In Greek, "ne" means "yes" and so the adventure begins!
2. At Delphi, Camilla stays at the Apollon Hotel. Due to a shortage of rooms, Camilla moves out after one night. Where does she move to?

Answer: The artists' studio on the hill

Simon invites Camilla to stay with him and the artists at the studio. Among those is a young artist who has been travelling through the hills with a donkey. The donkey plays no part in the story, although a mule is later stolen from a nearby archaeological dig!
3. The brother Michael referred to by the title is Camilla's brother.

Answer: False

Michael is Simon's brother. He spent the war in Greece and was killed. Interestingly and mysteriously, he is not a war casualty.
4. Camilla and Simon visit a Greek family who share information about Michael's final days with them. Two of the family members offer to show them the place where Michael died. Which two members are these?

Answer: Stephanos and Niko

Stephanos has been like a father to Michael. Niko, his grandson,
has an interesting taste in clothes and wears pink socks on one occasion.
5. The eldest family member tells Simon that Michael has been murdered. Does he tell Simon who the murderer was?

Answer: Yes

Incredibly, the family have known who murdered Michael for many years.
6. Near Michael's death site is a cave which he had explored before his death. By the end of the novel, which of the following had NOT been found in the cave?

Answer: A casket of precious jewels

The arms and gold were stashed during the war. The statue has been hidden in its own grotto for many years. The statue was the item of most interest to Michael and it is this he wrote about to his brother, drawing Simon to Greece to find it.
7. Michael is not the only character in the book to discover the cave. Nigel and Danielle have both visited the cave. How do Simon and Camilla deduce that Nigel has been to the cave?

Answer: They find a drawing Nigel has made of a plant that Camilla has noticed near the cave

The drawing is one of the best Nigel has produced. It is of a cyclamen clump springing from a rock cleft in which some dead wildflowers are also present. Camilla sees this rock cleft in real life near the cave and recognises the subject of the picture.

She cleverly puts two and two together! Incidentally, just in case you were worried about the missing mule, it is Nigel who steals it to travel to the cave! As far as I am aware, no mules were harmed in the writing of the story!
8. One of the most chilling scenes in the book occurs when Camilla makes the statement "And that is how Danielle Lascaux was murdered within twenty yards of me, and I never lifted a finger to help her" Why doesn't Camilla lift a finger to help Danielle?

Answer: Danielle is quietly strangled by her boyfriend and Camilla does not realise it is happening

Danielle is on friendly terms with her boyfriend when the murder occurs. He does not want to share the gold and other ill-gotten gains with her and thus disposes of her. Boyfriends like that I can do without!
9. Danielle, Michael and Stephano's son are not the only characters who are murdered in the story (Mary got a bit blood thirsty on this one!) Nigel, the young artist, is also killed. Who kills Nigel?

Answer: Angelos

Nigel has stumbled across the secret treasures hidden in the cave and must be disposed of before he can betray the secret. Angelos is a bit of a shady character.
10. In all the best stories good triumphs over evil and Simon avenges his brother Michael's murder amomgst other misdeeds. How does he do this?

Answer: He fights with Angelo, the murderer, and kills him

In a rather brutal fight, Simon kills Angelos the murderer in self defence. He is also angry at Angelos for attacking Camilla and killing Stephanos' son. Angelos was the boyfriend of Danielle and was responsible for the deaths of her and Nigel.
Camilla and Simon fall in love and we presume they live happily ever after. I like to think so!
