Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Frost's poetry is primarily based upon New England life. Where was he actually born?

Answer: California

Frost was actually born in California. He did wind up moving to Lawrence, Massachusetts when he was 11.
2. This poem's title originally comes from a line in Shakespeare's play, "Macbeth." Which poem is it?

Answer: Out, Out

This is easily one of my favorite Frost poems. The personification of the chainsaw in this poem is chilling.
3. "The land was ours before we were the land's" comes from what Frost poem?

Answer: The Gift Outright

"The Gift Outright" is a poem about colonial times.
4. What is one main theme in much of Frost's poetry?

Answer: death

I am actually writing a term paper over the monstrous theme of death throughout Frost's works. It can be seen in poems like "Desert Places", "Out, Out", and "Home Burial".
5. In "Home Burial", what is the mother's name?

Answer: Amy

The father of the dead child addresses his wife as "Amy" two or three times during this poem.
6. "Something there is that doesn't love a wall" is a line from "Mending Wall". What is the "something" mentioned?

Answer: nature/narrator

Nature doesn't love a wall. It continually tries to tear it down, year after year. Hunters, men and neighbors might mess up a wall but they don't really set out to tear a wall down.
7. Frost committed suicide.

Answer: False

Frost didn't commit suicide. He had a son who committed suicide and a daughter who had a complete mental collapse.
8. Robert Frost read poetry at President Dwight Eisenhower's inauguration.

Answer: False

Frost was invited to read poetry at JFK's inauguration. He read "The Gift Outright" at Kennedy's inauguration in 1961. He (Frost) died two years later.
9. What actually bends the birches down to stay in Frost's poem, "Birches"?

Answer: ice storms

Frost dreams of children playing on the birch trees and bending them, though he knows that only ice storms can bend birches down to stay.
10. In what poem is a little boy de-handed by a roaring chainsaw?

Answer: Out, Out

Once again, I felt like I had to bring up my favorite Frost poem, "Out, Out". In the poem, the young boy doesn't even realize he's cut his own hand off until it's too late. He bleeds to death before anything can be done to save him.
