Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When is the play predominantly set in?

Answer: Renaissance

"Romeo and Juliet" is set during the Renaissance. In that time period, there were two families that would constantly bicker. In the town of Verona, there are two controlling families named the Capulets and the Montagues. These two families have a long standing conflict with each other and constantly get into fights over unimportant things. Throughout the play, the two families' dislike for each other increases, until a tragedy happens.
2. Which of these words best describes Prince Escalus?

Answer: Authoritative

Prince Escalus is seen as an authoritative figure in "Romeo and Juliet", not just because he is the king, but because he enforces the rules to the fullest extent of the law. Prince Escalus is the prince of Verona in "Romeo and Juliet". In the opening scene, Prince Escalus sees the Montagues and Capulets fighting yet again, so he says that if the families fight again that the lords of each house will pay with their lives. Also, Prince Escalus is at the scene where Romeo, Juliet and Paris are found dead near Juliet's grave.
3. Who is the nurse's assistant?

Answer: Peter

The Capulet's nurse has her own assistant named Peter. The Nurse is a strong character who bosses her assistant, Peter, around throughout the whole play. Peter is always following the Nurse around and he speaks very little because the Nurse does not want him to talk.
4. What is the name of Romeo's personal servant?

Answer: Balthasar

Balthasar makes a short appearance at the end of "Romeo and Juliet". When Balthasar visits Romeo after Romeo is exiled, Balthasar worries that Romeo might do something that he would regret. When Romeo and Balthasar go to see
Juliet's tomb, Romeo says that if Balthasar is going to look to see what he was doing, Romeo will kill Balthasar.
5. What is the name of Romeo's first love?

Answer: Rosaline

This may be a tricky question because the answer that seems obvious is Juliet. But before Romeo meets Juliet, Romeo is in love with a young girl named Rosaline. Rosaline does not return Romeo's love and decides to become a nun and be abstinent. When Romeo sees Juliet at the party, he instantly forgets about Rosaline and wants to know more about Juliet.
6. Who is Mercutio related to?

Answer: The Prince

Mercutio is related to the prince of Verona named Escalus. Mercutio can be described as a strong character with a quick wit. Mercutio is a major character in the early stages, but he is killed by a kinsman of Capulet named Tybalt in the middle of the play. Romeo kills Tybalt in rage and is exiled.
7. How many friars are mentioned in this play?

Answer: Two

Two friars are mentioned in "Romeo and Juliet", but only one has a speaking role. Friar Laurence is the man the married Romeo and Juliet, thought up Juliet's plan to attempt a fake suicide and was the first person to see Romeo, Juliet and Paris dead. The other friar, Friar John, is mentioned when he tries to get news to Romeo about Juliet, but is quarantined because of the plague. Friar John has no speaking roles.
8. Who sells Romeo the poison?

Answer: Apothecary

The Apothecary makes a very short, but powerful impact in the course of events in this play. When the Apothecary sells Romeo the poison while Romeo is in exile, he knows the consequences of what will happen. The Apothecary can be described as evil for selling Romeo poison, easy to influence because Romeo makes him sell Romeo the poison and smart because he knows the consequences of what Romeo wants to do with the poison and tries to stop him from using it.
9. Lord Capulet forces Juliet to marry Paris in the middle of Act I.

Answer: False

When Paris asks Lord Capulet for Juliet's hand in marriage, Lord Capulet wants Juliet to wait another two years because she is too young. Later in the play, Lord Capulet changes his mind and wants Juliet to get married very soon. Juliet is only thirteen years old throughout the extent of the play.
10. Friar John comes up with the plan for Juliet to fake her own death.

Answer: False
