Sadly, later on, Katrina catches a fever and miscarries their second child.

Dirk is bitterly jealous of Ruth and Storm, and also the fact that Michael (who he thinks is merely Sean's nephew) is Sean's partner in the wattle business.
In his anger he sets a fire in the wattle stands. One of the native workers is killed and several are injured. Dirk himself is almost caught by the fire.
Had the fire taken hold and destroyed more of the crop, Sean would have been ruined.

Dirk grows up to be thoroughly evil, and through his wicked schemes Sean and his second wife Ruth are led to believe their daughter desperately needs them. As they rush to her side, Dirk ambushes their car and bludgeons Sean and Ruth to ensure they are both dead. He then throws their bodies into the river to hide the evidence of his involvement.
