Currencies Trivia Questions

1. What medium or method of exchange was favoured in New Zealand before large numbers of European colonists arrived in the mid-late 19th century?

From Quiz
Kiwi Currency

Answer: Barter

New Zealand has a relatively short history of human occupation. It was the last significant land mass to be occupied by humans (Polynesian explorers found it just after 1300CE). Localised tribes were mostly self sufficient but there was some exchange of goods between groups. This barter system continued into the early/mid 1800s. When European settlers arrived in numbers, numerous international currencies were traded in the early 1800s based on their metal content.

2. In the Caribbean country of Haiti, it is a common practice to price goods in Haitian dollars. What exactly about this is odd?

From Quiz Cents and Sensibility

Answer: Haitian dollars do not actually exist

Haiti's official currency is called the gourde, which is divisible into 100 centimes. American dollars are also used, but mainly by the well-to-do minority. The Haitian dollar is a purely imaginary unit of account that is equivalent to five gourdes; there has never actually been a currency issued by this name. This means that while prices are quoted in Haitian dollars, people actually pay for things with gourdes and centimes. The origin of this practice appears to go back to the American occupation of Haiti during the First World War. During this period, the gourde was pegged to the American dollar at a rate of 5 gourdes to the dollar, and people became accustomed to converting dollars to gourdes at this rate. However, the exchange rate of the Haitian gourde has floated free of the American dollar since the 1980s, and so is no longer fixed at 5:1. Nevertheless, the practice of quoting prices in imaginary dollars and converting them to gourdes for payment has remained a fact of daily life in Haiti.

3. Which currency do you need to purchase a pewter plate in Central Market, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia?

From Quiz Southeast Asian Currencies

Answer: Ringgit

The currency of Malaysia is the Malaysian ringgit (MYR). The locals use the abbreviation RM (Ringgit Malaysia, in the Malay language). Located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Central Market (or Pasar Seni, in the Malay language) is a popular tourist attraction. Tourists frequent this place to purchase some of the most well-known Malaysian souvenirs, such as batik, songket, wau kite, durian chocolate, and pewter goods. In the late 1880s, Malaysia was the world's largest tin producer. Pewter goods are made of tin (85-99%), antimony, copper, and silver. Founded in 1885, Royal Selangor is a reputable Malaysian pewter manufacturer, known for its high quality tableware and home decoration items. The rand, the ruble, and the rupee are the currencies used in South Africa, Belarus, and India, respectively.

4. The 1999 commemorative £2 coin celebrated the Rugby World Cup, hosted that year by the UK. Where was the final of this huge sporting event held?

That's a fairly good return I think. The 1999 Rugby World Cup was won by Australia, who beat France in the final by a score of 35-12. England, Wales and Scotland all were eliminated in the quarter finals.
