Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Where's my knave? My fool?- Go you and call my fool hither...Where's my fool, ho? I think the world's asleep." Who fetches his fool?

Answer: An attendant

In this, Act 1 scene 4, Kent has returned incognito and already there are signs that Regan and Goneril are not so full of devotion.
2. "Why, what a monstrous fellow art thou, thus to rail on one that's neither know of thee nor knows thee?" Who says that?

Answer: Oswald

This line brings a smile to my face, but Oswald really was a scumbag. A mercenary dogs-body, more than happy to perform the most morally ambiguous of tasks.
3. Which character speaks these lines in reference to being placed in the stocks? "Some time I shall sleep out, the rest I'll whistle"

Answer: Kent

The stocks don't look too comfortable to me, but it was a chance for Kent to have a little rest and wait till Lear finds out.
4. Lear wishes to speak with Regan and Cornwall. Among other things, what does Lear say when told that they are asleep?

Answer: Fetch me a better answer

How callous of them. They won't even see him. He might be a little temperamental but he has just given them half of everything he owned.
5. "O, Reason not the need" Where is the scene set in which that line is spoken?

Answer: Gloucester's castle

This is the first line of a great passage.
6. Why does Edgar not reveal his true identity to Gloucester when he happens upon him, now a poor blinded man?

Answer: He still believes his father is set against him

Gloucester is Edgar's father. Gloucester is painfully disillusioned and knows now that it was Edmund who was treacherous, not Edgar. Edgar doesn't know this.
7. When Oswald says to Regan "Your sister is the better soldier", who does he profess she is better than?

Answer: Goneril's husband

Later Goneril calls her husband, Albany, a "milk-livered man"; in the same scene he says "Wisdom and goodness to the vile seem vile: filths savour but themselves"
8. "...pray, do not mock me: I am a very foolish fond old man" To whom does Lear address these words?

Answer: Cordelia

He can hardly credit what he sees, Cordelia, who has just woken him with music from a big sleep. For a moment he thinks he has died and gone to heaven or is perhaps in France.
9. In the last tragic scene, Albany says 'That's but a trifle here'. To what is he referring?

Answer: Edmund's death

Edmund had given the order for the hangman to see to Cordelia and Lear. Before he passed he did admit to this but took his time about it, it was all too late.
10. "Why should a dog, a horse, a _____ , have life, and thou no breath at all?"

Answer: Rat

From the poignant, tragic lament Lear utters before going the same way.
