Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who married Portia in "Merchant of Venice"?

Answer: Bassanio

Antonio is the merchant of Venice who lends Bassanio money so he can marry Portia. He borrows it from Shylock until his ships come in, but when they don't, Shylock literally wants his "pound of flesh" (which is where the term comes from). Portia pretends to be a male lawyer and saves Antonio.

When she goes to do this she leaves her house in the care of Bassanio's friend Lorenzo (who's married to Shylock's daughter!)
2. Who was Gertrude's second husband in "Hamlet"?

Answer: Claudius

Gertrude is Hamlet's mother, the queen of Denmark. Hamlet's father was killed by his brother Claudius so he could become king and also marry Gertrude. Hamlet's father then comes back as a ghost and convinces Hamlet to avenge his murder. Polonius is the king's advisor, who is mistaken for Claudius and killed by mistake. Bernardo is one of the guards who first sees the ghost and reports it to Hamlet's friend Horatio.
3. Who married Katherina in "The Taming of The Shrew"?

Answer: Petruchio

She is the shrew, and he is the one who tames her. Baptista is her father who says that she has to be married before her younger (and prettier, and sweeter) sister Bianca. Lucentio and Hortensio are two of Bianca's many suitors. This is the play on which the musical, "Kiss Me, Kate!" is based.
4. Who was Othello's wife?

Answer: Desdemona

He is the Moor General that promoted Cassio rather than Iago. Iago gets revenge by making Othello think his wife Desdemona is cheating on him with Cassio. Emilia is Iago's wife and Bianca is the true object of Cassio's affections. Nerissa is actually not in this play (she is Portia's maid in "Merchant of Venice").
5. Who was Oberon's wife in "A Midsummer Night's Dream"?

Answer: Titania

Oberon is the King of The Fairies and Titania is the Queen. Helena and Hermia are young women involved in a mixup with a love potion ordered by Oberon that is the primary plot of this play. Hippolyta is the Queen of the Amazons, engaged to The Duke of Athens.
6. Who was married to Albany in "King Lear"?

Answer: Goneril

Cordelia is Lear's youngest daughter whom Albany tries to convince to treat her father better. This causes her to love someone else (Edmund) and she commits suicide when Edmund is killed in battle against her father. Regan and Cordelia are her sisters, and Curan is a courtesan.
7. Who married Beatrice in "Much Ado About Nothing"?

Answer: Benedick

She is Leonata's niece, and he verbally spars with her when they first visit them with his boss, Don Pedro. Don Pedro and Leonata end up tricking them to fall in love with each other. At a double ceremony Claudio marries Hero, who is actually Leonata's daughter!
8. Who was Miranda's love interest in "The Tempest"?

Answer: Ferdinand

Prospero is her father, a sorcerer marooned on an enchanted island years ago. Caliban is the son of a witch and Prospero's servant. Ferdinand and Sebastian just got shipwrecked there themselves, and Ferdinand falls in love with Miranda upon seeing her.
9. Who married Viola in "Twelfth Night"?

Answer: Orsino

She and Cesario are the same person! That is her disguised as Orsino's servant. He has her bringing love letters to Olivia but Olivia falls for her as Cesario and she is in love with Orsino herself! Sebastian is her twin brother for whom she is mistaken.
10. Who was in love with Valentine in "Two Gentleman of Verona"?

Answer: Silvia

He is one of the Gentlemen of Verona whom is in love with her. She only loves him but is also pursued by the other one, Proteus. Julia is Proteus' true love and Lucetta is her maid. Juliet isn't in the story at all: she is of course from "Romeo and Juliet".
