Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The action in "Much Ado About Nothing" takes place in which town/city?

Answer: Messina

This is mentioned in the very first line of the play, when Leonato states "I learn in this letter that Don Pedro of Arragon comes this night to Messina." Another Shakespeare comedy, "The Taming of the Shrew", splits its time between Padua and Verona.
2. Which of the following characters is NOT related to Beatrice?

Answer: Borachio

Leonato is her uncle. Antonio is Leonato's brother, and Hero is Leonato's daughter. Borachio is one of Don John's men, and orchestrates the downfall of Hero.
3. Benedick makes all the following observations about Hero except for which one?

Answer: She's too short for a tall praise

During his conversation with Claudio, Benedick does make mention of Hero's being short, but he never says she's "too short for a tall praise."
4. Complete the quote: in Act II, Scene 1, Leonato says to Beatrice, "Cousin, you apprehend passing shrewdly." Beatrice replies, "I have a good eye, uncle. I can see ____"?

Answer: A church by daylight

Beatrice is a confirmed bachelorette, and makes many speeches telling how there is no man good enough to marry her.
5. Don John, Claudio, and Hero plot to get Beatrice and Benedick together.

Answer: False

It's Don Pedro who plots with Claudio, Hero and Leonato to get them together. Don John plots to break up Claudio and Hero.
6. What is Don Pedro's minstrel's name?

Answer: Balthazar

Balthazar sings "Hey nonny nonny!" to Don Pedro, Claudio and Leonato in Act III, Scene 3.
7. Beatrice states that a man who has one is more than a boy, and a man who has none is less than a man. To what is she referring?

Answer: A beard

Since she won't accept a man who has a beard, nor one who has none, she's pretty much taken herself out of the running for a husband!
8. Benedick says the woman he marries will have all the following attributes, except which?

Answer: Blonde hair

Actually, he says that "her hair shall be of what color it please God." Although with his list (rich, wise, virtuous, noble, a good conversationalist, an excellent musician), he may be narrowing the field a bit too much!
9. Hero and Ursula use their conversation in the garden to convince Beatrice that Benedick is in love with her.

Answer: True

Margaret is also involved when she is sent to fetch Beatrice into the garden.
10. At what time did Hero talk with a man outside her window on the night before her wedding?

Answer: She didn't. It was Margaret.

Don John plants Borachio at Hero's window, and he woos Margaret, but calls Margaret "Hero" the whole time, thereby fooling Claudio into thinking that Hero is unfaithful.
11. What does Claudio call Hero during their wedding in Act IV, Scene 1?

Answer: A rotten orange

He says to Leonato "There Leonato. Take her back again. Give not this rotten orange to your friend." He has seen what he thought was Hero in a passionate embrace with another man on the night before their wedding.
12. Don Pedro tells Benedick: "I shall see thee, ere I die, look pale with love." Benedick says Don Pedro will see him pale with all of the following except which?

Answer: Death

Benedick has always been "an obstinate heretic in the despite of beauty." The Prince eventually leads the con that puts Beatrice and Benedick together in the end.
13. How does Leonato initially take the news from Claudio that his daughter is not a "maid"?

Answer: He threatens to kill her

Leonato's anger is aimed squarely at Hero, his loving daughter, rather than at these noblemen who swear that they saw her making love to a "ruffian" at her chamber window. He later changes his mind, telling his brother, "I know in my soul Hero is belied."
14. Leonato tells Claudio that he will consider himself avenged of Claudio's false accusation about his daughter if Claudio will do what?

Answer: Marry the daughter of his brother

The final setup! Leonato offers his brother's "daughter" to Claudio, after Claudio discovers that Hero has "died". The next morning, Leonato makes good on his promise, but his brother presents Hero, alive and well, making for a happy ending to the Claudio/Hero story.
15. Beatrice and Benedick finally stop making fun of each other and get married.

Answer: False

It is true that they get married, but they do not stop making fun of each other. Their final exchange in the play goes like this:

Benedick: Come, I will have thee. But by this light I take thee for pity.
Beatrice: I would not deny you. But by this good day I yield upon great persuasion; and partly to save your life, for I was told you were in a consumption.
Benedick: Peace! I will stop your mouth! [Kisses her]
