Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the kingdom where the play takes place?

Answer: Navarre

Most of the play's action takes place at the King of Navarre's court. The Princess in this play, however, is the princess of France.
2. What are the names of the King's three friends?

Answer: Barrone, Longaville and Dumain

There are multiple spellings for Barrone's name so I chose the variation used in the version I performed in high school.
3. What is the King's name?

Answer: Ferdinand

In the play's "Dramatis Personae" we learn his name is Ferdinand. Costard is the jester and Armando is referred to by Shakespeare as the "fantastical Spaniard".
4. What is the Princess's name?

Answer: One is never given

We only know her as the Princess of France. Katharine, Maria and Rosaline are her attendants.
5. Why are the Princess and her attendants made to camp outside of the King's gates?

Answer: The King and his friends are devoting themselves to studying

The King and his friends have devoted themselves to study and avoiding earthly pleasures such as women and alcohol for three years. Barrone is very hesitant to agree to this because he wants to fall in love and fully enjoy life, but he is loyal to his friends and decides to sign.
6. Which member of the King's university breaks his oath first?

Answer: Barrone

Barrone sends a love letter to Rosaline that Costard delivers to the ladies.
7. Which member of the King's university pines for his "Sweet Maria, empress of my love"?

Answer: Longaville

The proper pairing of couples is:
King Ferdinand & The Princess
Barrone & Rosaline
Dumain & Katharine
Longaville & Maria
8. How do the ladies decide to trick the gentlemen at the masquerade?

Answer: By switching the gifts given to them

The Princess and Rosaline switch favors while Maria and Katharine do the same. The trick works and the men each woo the wrong lady.
9. Why do the ladies have to leave so suddenly?

Answer: The King of France dies

The Princess's father dies and so she and her attendants return to France and the boys return to their studies.
10. This play was made into a 1930's style musical in 1999 starring Kenneth Branaugh as Barrone and who as Longaville?

Answer: Matthew Lillard

Matthew Lillard was surprisingly good at musical Shakespeare; so was Alicia Silverstone as the Princess for that matter. I hope you enjoyed my quiz.
