Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many steps, according to Holmes, are on the way up to his flat?

Answer: 17

From "A Scandal in Bohemia". Holmes also remarks that Watson's servant girl is clumsy (she has slit Watson's boot while cleaning it) and that he is back in the medical practice (he sees a bulge from his stethoscope).
2. How many times did Watson marry?

Answer: at least once

Watson has certainly had one, possibly two or three wives over the course of his life. It is implied that he is perhaps a widower to begin with, he then marries Mary Morstan (from "The Sign of Four"), and after she dies, one more Mrs. Watson is mentioned! This is a long standing mystery, which most Sherlockians have puzzled about, but, hey, it makes good trivia.
3. Who is "the woman"?

Answer: Irene Adler

Watson married Mary Morstan. Annie Harrison is from "The Naval Treaty". All I can say about Agatha is, why? Why?! How heartless is that, to get engaged for the purpose of gathering information, then dump the girl when you're through?
4. In how many stories did Holmes say, "Elementary, my dear Watson"?

Answer: 0

He never said this! He did say "Elementary," and he did call Watson "My dear Watson," but never together.
5. Holmes is a widower.

Answer: False

Holmes never married, and therefore can't be a widower.
6. Holmes and Watson found each other through the personals in the newpaper.

Answer: False

Watson's old comrade actually brought them together.
7. Where is the "Valley of Fear"?

Answer: United States

The "Valley of Fear" was actually Vermissa Valley in the American west.
8. Who gives Holmes the same feeling as when he sees the serpents in the zoo?

Answer: Charles Augustus Milverton

Charles Augustus Milverton...the slimy blackmailer...ick.
9. In "The Red-Headed League", what was the task assigned to members?

Answer: copying the Encyclopedia Britannica

This pointless task was only assigned to keep the guy away from his shop long enough for some illegal activity to be perpetrated.
10. And finally: Where does Holmes keep his pipe tobacco?

Answer: Persian slipper

Holmes keeps his pipe tobacco in a Persian slipper, which he apparently keeps in the woodbox. Go figure.
