Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. All the four novels featuring Sherlock Holmes involve Dr Watson, but mostly as a helpful comrade. In one of them, Dr Watson plays a very active role right from the beginning of the investigation of the case. Which novel is that?

Answer: The Hound of the Baskervilles

In "The Hound of the Baskervilles", Sherlock Holmes sends Watson to live at Baskerville Hall along with Sir Henry Baskerville. 2. Which of the four novels involves the continent of Asia?

Answer: The Sign of Four

Jonathan Small and his friends are imprisoned in the island of Andamans, after they are convicted for the murder of merchant Achmet. It is here that they meet Captain Morstan and Major Sholto, and cut the deal for their escape. The Andaman islands belong to the group of Andaman and Nicobar islands, off the coast of India, in the Arabian sea.

Answer: Lauriston Gardens

Enoch J. Drebber is one of the victims of Jefferson Hope's vengeance in the novel "A Study in Scarlet". His body is found at No.3 Lauriston Gardens off the Brixton Road by the beat policeman.
4. How much money does Sir Henry inherit from Sir Charles when he enters into possession of Baskerville Hall?

Answer: 740,000 pounds

An interesting detail in Chapter 5 of the novel. This is also one of the rare moments when Holmes makes a comment on money. ("I had no idea that so gigantic a sum was involved").
5. What is the name of the launch that Jonathan Small and his friend arrange for their escape down the Thames?

Answer: Aurora

The name of the steam boat is "Aurora", whose owner is Mordecai Smith. It was a clipper. Holmes and his friends had a hard time trying to catch her on the police steam boat, in the final chase, down the Thames.
6. What is the name of the housekeeper employed by Mr. Bartholmew Sholto in the "The Sign of Four"?

Answer: Mrs Bernstone

Mrs Bernstone was the only servant in the whole household of Mr Bartholomew Sholto. Mrs Hudson is Sherlock Holmes' landlady. Mrs Barrymore is the housekeeper of the Baskerville Hall in "The Hound of Baskervilles". Mrs Allen is the housekeeper of the Manor house in "The Valley of Fear".
7. In the beginning of the novel "The Valley of Fear", Sherlock Holmes and Watson analyse a cryptic message sent to them by Porlock. They finally solve it with the help of which book?

Answer: An almanac

Holmes and Watson manage to solve the cryptic message send by Fred Porlock by using the Almanac. This is also one of those rare moments in the canon, when Holmes lavishly appreciates Dr Watson for his brilliance in analysis. ("Brilliant, Watson. You are scintillating this morning.")
8. In "The Hound of the Baskervilles", Stapleton spies on Sir Henry Baskerville while he is in London. What disguise does Stapleton use to mask his identity?

Answer: A false beard

9. What is the reaction of Miss Morstan upon seeing the empty treasure chest in the "The Sign of Four"?

Answer: She remains calm

Miss Morstan was not very interested in the Agra treasure. Upon discovering that the treasure chest is empty, she naturally does not lose her composure. Dr Watson is relieved too, since he can now propose to Miss Morstan without the burden of the riches at the back of his mind.
10. Which of the following items plays a major role in clarifying the mystery of the murder in "The Valley of Fear"?

Answer: All of them

Sherlock Holmes gets his first clue that the original story told by Mr Barker and Mrs Douglas is false when he finds that the blood mark on the window sill matches Barker's slipper. He gets his next clue that something could be hidden in the moat when he notices the missing dumb-bell.

He fishes the dumb-bell out from the moat in the night by using Dr Watson's umbrella. The dumb-bell was used to sink the clothes of Mr Douglas.
11. Who all sign the pact of the "The Sign of Four"?

Answer: Jonathan Small, Dost Akbar, Abdullah Khan, Mahomet Singh

"The Sign of Four" is a pact between the foursome who stole the Agra treasure from merchant Achmet. They are Jonathan Small, Dost Akbar, Abdullah Khan and Mahomet Singh.

Answer: Creosote

Tonga steps on the creosote from the cracked carboy in the overhead chamber of Sholto's room.
13. Which substance is used by Stapleton to give the Hound (of the Baskervilles) a fearful and supernatural appearance?

Answer: Phosphorus

Stapleton uses phosphorus on the muzzle of the Hound which gives it a hellish appearence in the night. (Phosphorous glows in the night as it is fluorescent.)
14. A warning message is sent to Sir Henry by Miss Stapleton when he is in London. The message text is "As you value your life or your reason keep away from the moor". She uses words cut out from the "Times" to print the message, except one word. Which word does she write in ink?

Answer: moor

She writes the word 'moor' in ink since she cannot find it in the
copy of the "Times". All the other words are common words which she is able to pick up from a paragraph in the "Times". The word 'moor' is not a very common word.
15. Finally, an easy one to end with. Most Holmes stories and novels end with a conclusion or a retrospection, where Holmes explains how he was able to solve the mystery. Only one of the four novels does not feature a Conclusion or an Epilogue. Which novel is that?

Answer: The Sign of Four

"The Sign of Four" ends with Jonathan Small recounting his story of the Agra treasure, when most of the mystery is cleared up for the reader. This novel is different from other novels in that, the solution of the mystery unfolds before the reader continously, so that there is no need for a chapter on retrospection.
