Answer: Proton

Proton is a world of science. Its sole inhabitants are the Citizens (the wealthy individuals who hire serfs for the Game) and the serfs. Stile grew up on Proton and has become a Master Gamesman.

Answer: Through a series of grids

Players of the Game enter the Grid-Hall, in which they strategically choose the event they are to play. Each player controls either the columns or the rows of the grid. In his first event in the novel, Stile is given a choice of "Naked", "Tool", "Machine", or "Animal". He chose "Naked", and his opponent chose the "Physical" option. Therefore, the two competed in a race.

Answer: Horses

Stile has been tending horses since his parents left him on the planet of Proton. Since then, he has come to love horses and treats them with the utmost respect. It is because of this love that he is promoted by his Citizen and becomes an excellent rider.

Answer: His knees

While riding a horse in a race, Stile's unknown enemy fires a laser beam at his knees. He loses the race and is immediately brought into surgery. However, unsure of the safety of the surgery, he escapes the surgical room and is eventually fired by his Citizen.

Answer: A curtain

The curtain falls over a large portion of Proton and the fantasy realm. One may only cross it if his alternate self has died in the other reality. It may also only be crossed if that person truly wants to cross.

Answer: An amulet

A tiny amulet in the shape of a demon is handed to Stile by a stranger who informs Stile he needs to wear clothing in the fantasy realm. The amulet supposedly offers an illusion of clothing, but instead it tries to choke him. Stile is able to use his skills as a Master Gamesman to escape the threat.

Answer: Unicorn and Werewolf

Neysa the unicorn and Kurrelgyre the werewolf become not only friends with Stile, but also with one another. This is very unusual since unicorns and werewolves are natural enemies. They aid Stile during his adventure in the fantasy realm and help him cross back over to Proton during the novel.

Answer: Know himself

The Oracle in the west of the fantasy realm tells Stile that he must know himself when he asked about his best course of action. However, when he asks for more details, Stile learns that a person may only ask one question of the Oracle, and he feels he wasted his chance. However, this does lead to his discovery that he is also an Adept.

Answer: Blue

Stile's other self was the Blue Adept, and he therefore exhibits the powers of that magician. During his travels, though, Stile does meet the Black Adept who tries to trap him and the Yellow Adept who tries to seduce him. At the end of the novel, Stile begins his new life as the Blue Adept in the Blue Demesnes.

Answer: Phaze

Phaze is Proton's fantasy counterpart. Stile mentions that the landscape is nearly identical, but Phaze is much more beautiful since it maintains its greenery while Proton does not. However, Stile remains alert at all times in Phaze due to the presence of magic in the realm.
