Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi: Ascension Quiz

Since the release of this novel, I figured it would have its own quiz, even if it was difficult and mentally exhausting to make for a full 25-question quiz on Christie Golden's novel.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the creature that Gavar Khai killed in Chapter 2?

Answer: Tikk

Tikk is the name of the flying creature, whose species is an uvak, and who had personally belonged to Gavar Khai's daughter, Vestara. Gavar Khai did this because he felt that Vestara betrayed him and the Lost Tribe of the Sith by siding with the Jedi. Tikk's life was previously used by the Sith in order to determine Vestara's worthiness to them, and her unemotional reaction to her pet's impending doom was what allowed Tikk to live in the long-run.
2. The Lost Tribe of the Sith's Grand Lord's name is Sarasu Taalon.

Answer: False

The name of the Lost Tribe's Grand Lord is Darish Vol, an elderly Keshiri male who may very well be as powerful as Luke Skywalker in the Force. Sarasu Taalon is the name of the Sith High Lord who had previously appeared in the three middle books of "Fate of the Jedi", which were, "Backlash", "Allies", and "Vortex".

In the latter novel, Taalon was killed by Vestara Khai because she believed him too corrupted by Abeloth to continue leading the Sith against the Jedi, Grand Lord Vol notwithstanding.
3. Which political figure did Abeloth decide to take the form of?

Answer: Rokari Kem

Rokari Kem was a female Jessar who had liberated her people from slavery under the oppressive rule of the Minyavish species. Seeing how much Kem was loved by her own people and by others in the Galactic Alliance, Abeloth went to Kem and absorbed her so that she could take on her guise. From this, Abeloth allied with the Lost Tribe's division on Coruscant to become the Galactic Alliance's Chief of State.
4. Which Sith world served as the catalyst for Vestara Khai's decision to turn her back on her Sith traditions?

Answer: Dromund Kaas

On Dromund Kaas, Vestara, along with the Skywalkers and Jaina Solo, were forced to fight off against a strike team of Sith Sabers sent by Abeloth to kill them. With Vestara's own father, Gavar, leading them, she was forced to duel him, and in the end, she killed him. From this, Vestara decided to admit her reciprocated love for Ben and chose to become a Jedi apprentice.
5. The three political figures in the Galactic Alliance triumvirate were: Jedi Master Saba Sebatyne, GA Senator Haydnat Treen, and who else?

Answer: Wynn Dorvan

Wynn Dorvan, who was previously the Chief of Staff of the now-deposed Chief of State Natasi Daala, was the third member of the Galactic Alliance triumvirate, working with Master Sebatyne and Senator Treen to solve the government's more immediate problems.

Interestingly, Dorvan wasn't one of the first three of the triumvirate, as he had replaced GA General Merratt Jaxton in this position, who held it with Sebatyne and Treen in the previous novel after Daala was deposed. Dorvan's bureaucratic career made him a perfect choice to lead a government in its stabilizing steps.
6. Which Jedi Knight did Vestara Khai kill in the caverns of Upekzar?

Answer: Natua Wan

When Vestara, Ben, and Natua were fighting an ancient Sith demon known as a Dream Singer in the underground caverns of Upekzar, Ben was going to be the one consumed by the demon. Choosing her love of Ben over her duty as an upstart Jedi, Vestara decided to turn on Natua and sacrifice her to the Dream Singer. Natua died and Ben was saved, unbeknownst to Ben or any other Jedi of Vestara's treachery.
7. What was the real name of Kameron Suldar?

Answer: Ivaar Workan

Ivaar Workan was a Sith High Lord who posed as Senator Kameron Suldar, a freedom fighter from his home world of B'nish who freed his people of slavery. Workan was lucky enough to be part of the Imperial-Alliance conspiracy that was taking advantage of the galactic turmoil that the government was facing.

When Rokari Kem came and killed Grand Lord Darish Vol, Workan took Vol's place as leader of the Lost Tribe.
8. The Yuuzhan Vong characters of Nom Anor, Onimi, Shimrra Jamaane, and Tsavong Lah were all mentioned in this novel.

Answer: False

None of these Yuuzhan Vong characters was mentioned at all at any point in this novel. For those not in the know, Nom Anor was a treacherous Vong who sided with those he thought would give him the most advantage; Shimrra was the puppet Supreme Overlord of the species; Onimi was the true mastermind behind Shimrra; and Tsavong Lah was the Warmaster for most of the Yuuzhan Vong War. All of these characters appear in the novels of "The New Jedi Order".
9. Which of the following was part of the Imperial-Alliance conspiracy circle?

Answer: Sallinor Parova

Sallinor Parova was the Admiral who replaced the comatose Nek Bwua'tu as leader of the Galactic Alliance navy. Of all the members of the conspiracy circle, she was the only one to be caught by Club Bwua'tu for her actions. Before she could give her captors any information, she was assassinated by members of the Lost Tribe of the Sith in order to make it appear as though escaped convict and ex-Jedi Tahiri Veila was the one who killed Parova.
10. Which Moff was loyal to Jagged Fel instead of Natasi Daala?

Answer: Tol Getelles

Tol Getelles had masqueraded as being loyal to Admiral Daala when she tried to become Empress of the Imperial Remnant. One of his acts of deceit was pretending that he killed Jagged Fel when he recorded it to Daala, when Getelles simply stunned Jag. When Jag and his forces decide to engage Daala and her followers in the Exodo system, Getelles turned on her as expected.
11. Luke Skywalker of the Jedi Order moved out of the Galactic Alliance and away from Coruscant.

Answer: True

The reason that Luke publicly gave out was thathe thought that the Jedi would do more good for the galaxy overall if they weren't restrained by the creeds of the Galactic Alliance. In reality, though the latter reason may be true, Luke knew that the Lost Tribe of the Sith had already infiltrated Coruscant and would issue an anti-Jedi society on the GA capital as a result. Luke's plan was to let the Jedi first take of Abeloth, Ship, and their Sith allies, then come back to Coruscant and wipe out the rest of the Lost Tribe in one fell swoop.
12. Emala, Sligh, and Grees were on the run from Imperial forces for what reason?

Answer: They had stolen a de-aging formula

When the Squibs (that is, Emala, Sligh, and Grees) stole the de-aging formula from Moff Getelles, they went to the Solos in order to give out information regarding Daala's whereabouts. In exchange, they wanted credits and safety from their pursuers. The Solos made the discovery of what the Squibs did, informed Jagged Fel, and he coerced them into giving him the formula.
13. Who had been elected as temporary GA Chief of State after the triumvirate dissolved?

Answer: Padnel Ovin

Wynn Dorvan was thought of as the most likely candidate to be the interim Chief of State until a proper election came about. However, the Lost Tribe of the Sith manipulated the election so that they could instill Padnel Ovin, a relatively simplistic politician, so that they could manipulate him into doing their bidding. Ovin was sharp enough to see through this machination, so he installed Dorvan as his Chief of Staff, the same job that Dorvan worked under Daala's rule.
14. What did Luke Skywalker forgive Saba Sebatyne of doing?

Answer: Killing Kenth Hamner

Two novels prior, in "Vortex", Saba was forced to kill fellow Master Kenth Hamner so that the Jedi fleet could launch and help Luke combat Abeloth and the Sith. Though this action was helpful to Luke, Saba still felt guilty, believing she deserved whatever punishment Luke would allocate to her when he became the Jedi's Grand Master again. Luke told Saba she made the right choice under the circumstances and relieved her of any penalty.
15. How many chapters in this novel did Boba Fett appear in?

Answer: One

Although Fett appeared on the novel's back cover, which would typically indicate that he was one of the book's central characters like Ben Skywalker and Vestara Khai, the galaxy's greatest bounty hunter appeared in only one chapter of "Ascension". This had been done before in the preceding novel, "Conviction", when Tenel Ka Djo appeared in that book's back cover, then only appeared in a few chapters of that novel. Fett did, however, provide Daala crucial information regarding Moff Lecersen's loyalties to the Imperial Remnant.
16. Who was the first of the Imperial-Alliance conspirators to die?

Answer: Fost Bramsin

When Stavin Thaal and Haydnat Treen saw that the conspiracy circle was going to fail, with Lecersen forced into siding with Daala and Kameron Suldar really a Sith, Treen killed Bramsin, making it look like he died of old age. Treen then retired to her home world of Kuat whilst Thaal took care of Merratt Jaxton as a loose end and Sallinor Parova had been killed by the Sith, as stated before.

The conspiracy ended at that point.
17. How did Stavin Thaal kill Merratt Jaxton?

Answer: Thaal forced Jaxton to commit suicide

In keeping with making it look as if Jaxton committed suicide, after Thaal forced his fellow General into writing the suicide note, one of Thaal's bodyguards gave Jaxton a gun to really kill himself. Although this would have given Jaxton the chance to at least dispatch Thaal before one or both his bodyguards took care of him, it merely opened Jaxton's eyes to seeing how much of a coward he would have been, and how he would have easily revealed all of the conspiracy's members if he were interrogated. So Jaxton put the blaster in his mouth and pulled the trigger.
18. How did Rokari Kem dispatch the previous Galactic Alliance Chief of State so that she could assume the position?

Answer: Kem gave the Chief of State a Force-induced heart attack

During the Senate session that made her the Chief of State, Rokari Kem gave the previous Chief of State a heart attack using the Force. She didn't kill the Chief of State right away, as his death before she was elected would have allowed the Chief of Staff to legally take over the position. But after Kem was elected, she let the previous Chief of State die.
19. Which Jedi was sent to personally serve Jagged Fel?

Answer: Tahiri Veila

Tahiri Veila, who had been an escaped convict since the previous novel, had approached the Solo family, who gave her to Jagged Fel so that she could atone for killing Grand Admiral Gilad Pellaeon. Jag agreed to this so that he would see to it in an Imperial court what her fate would be, as it was killing an Imperial officer that had gotten her arrested by the Galactic Alliance in the first place. Tahiri would serve Jag as a bodyguard.
20. Allana Solo was intrigued with the Squib trio when she first met them.

Answer: True

When the Squibs had approached the Solos with the information regarding Daala, Allana had taken a peculiar interest in them. This was in stark contrast to her grandparents' reaction over the Squibs, which was one of annoyance regarding their previous contacts with them. Allana had worked with the Squibs in making it to Zekk and Taryn Zel's ship when their Imperial pursuers tried to kill them.
21. Who had killed Vestara's mother.

Answer: Abeloth

Although the personal death of Vestara's mother was not depicted in the novel's pages, it was indicated that Lahka Khai (Vestara's mother) had died thanks to Abeloth. Abeloth's responsibility in this was thanks to her mental attack on the Sith's Grand Lord.

When the Grand Lord hurt Abeloth back, she sent out a Force shock-wave (which was more like a tidal wave) which destroyed the Keshiri city of Tahv; Vestara's mother was among those who died in the destruction.
22. Where were the Keshiri Sith placed when the Lost Tribe secretly took over Coruscant?

Answer: In the Jedi Temple

While the human members of the Lost Tribe of the Sith served as Senators and spies on Coruscant, the Keshiri members worked to study and unlock the secrets in the Jedi Temple. This way, they wouldn't be revealed to the public, and thus wouldn't ruin the Sith's cover in the Galactic Alliance.

A few of the Keshiri Sith were killed by the remaining Barabel Jedi that lurked in the Temple's underground caverns.
23. What was Admiral Daala's personal Star Destroyer named?

Answer: Chimaera

The Chimaera had originally belonged to Grand Admiral Thrawn during the fledgling years of the New Republic. After Thrawn's death, Grand Admiral Pellaeon, who was originally Thrawn's subordinate Captain, took over the ship until the closing years of the Yuuzhan Vong War.

In honor of the man she failed to save from Tahiri Veila, Daala had commanded the ship that belonged to two legendary Imperial commanders for her own personal glory.
24. When did Rokari Kem reveal her true identity?

Answer: When Wynn Dorvan was brought before her

When Rokari Kem took residence in the Jedi Temple, Wynn Dorvan, captured by the Sith after she helped free Leia Organa Solo from prison, was one of the first to see who she really was. She wanted to know everything Dorvan knew in order to defeat her enemies. And that was when Dorvan knew that Abeloth and the Lost Tribe of the Sith had taken over the Galactic Alliance.
25. Who was the last character seen in the novel?

Answer: Vestara Khai

The character to appear in the very final scene in the novel was Vestara Khai. Vestara had contemplated her actions when she had killed Natua Wan in order to save her love, Ben Skywalker. She knew at that point that she would become a Sith again and it would break her heart if she were to face Ben again in order to kill him.
