Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Trapped by handcuffs after a little bondage in lovemaking goes wrong and her husband dies, a woman must confront her demons and repressed memories in order to survive.

Answer: Gerald's Game

Jessie does eventually get out of the handcuffs, but what she does to get out of them is unbelievable - except in a Stephen King novel.
2. An abused woman gets her revenge on her husband, in a most unusual way...through a painting she finds at a second hand store.

Answer: Rose Madder

A character in this book, Cynthia Smith, shows up in a later Stephen King book, "Desperation". "Rose Madder" is one of my favorites.
3. A 12 year old boy travels to a parallel universe called The Territories to save his mother and her Territories twinner.

Answer: The Talisman

"The Talisman" is in my top five favorite Stephen King books. Stephen King co-wrote this book with Peter Straub.
4. After tragically hitting an old gypsy woman while driving home, a lawyer begins to lose weight, and he keeps losing weight at an alarming rate.

Answer: Thinner

This story was written under the pseudonym Richard Bachman.
5. A family finds out the true meaning of horror while working as winter caretakers at the Overlook Hotel.

Answer: The Shining

Stephen King got the idea to write "The Shining" at a hotel he stayed in while passing through Colorado.
6. While on a quest, a man encounters three mysterious doorways on the beach. Each one opens up to a different year. Through these doorways he draws different companions to help him with his quest.

Answer: Dark Tower II - The Drawing of the Three

"The Dark Tower" series is one of Stephen King's greatest works. He wrote the first book, "The Gunslinger", in 1982. The eighth book, "The Dark Tower: The Wind Through the Keyhole", was published in 2012. Wow - 30 years later!
7. This book begins on "the loneliest highway in the world". In a small mining town, an evil presence takes over the bodies of people in order to get them to do his evil wishes.

Answer: Desperation

"The loneliest highway in the world" that I am referring to is Highway 50 in Nevada. I live a few blocks off Hwy 50 - and it's not that bad!
8. This book is about a far away land where dragons still live and magic still works, and in this kingdom lives a dark man known as 'Flagg'.

Answer: The Eyes of the Dragon

This book is more of a fantasy book, Stephen King style.
9. After a plague is accidentally released upon the world, the few survivors are divided between the forces of good and evil, to determine who will rebuild the world.

Answer: The Stand

This is also one of my favorite books. I also loved the made-for-TV mini-series based on this book. The 'Dark Man' or 'Randall Flagg' from this book is found in other Stephen King books as well.
10. While on their quest, a man and his companions end up in Kansas. While they are there, the man tells the others about his past: his teen-age years, his one and only love, and how he lost her.

Answer: The Dark Tower IV - Wizard and Glass

In this, the fourth "Dark Tower" book, we learn about some of Roland's past, and we finally begin to understand him and just what this quest means to him.
11. After being in a coma for almost five years, a man awakens and finds he has a strange power - after touching someone he can see their past, present, and future.

Answer: The Dead Zone

This is the first novel to take place in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine.
12. A woman is suspected of murdering the woman she works for as a housekeeper. Although she is innocent of this murder, it takes her back to a time when maybe she did commit a murder, and got away with it.

Answer: Dolores Claiborne

In the movie version of "Dolores Claiborne", Kathy Bates plays the leading role.
13. The rules are simple - if you walk too slow you get a warning, four warnings you are shot. There is only one winner, with the ultimate prize - anything you want for life.

Answer: The Long Walk

This was written under the pseudonym 'Richard Bachman' and appeared in the "Bachman Books".
14. Ralph starts seeing things like colors, shapes, and strange auras around his friends. He also sees bald doctors with rusty scalpels who keep showing up at the scene of a death.

Answer: Insomnia

Could the 'Red King' in this book be the same 'Crimson King' in the "Dark Tower" books?
15. A man seeks solitude, and the answers to his strange dreams at his lakeside house on Dark Score Lake. But the house is haunted, and the ghost is not always nice.

Answer: Bag of Bones

This Stephen King book has been referred to as a 'haunting love story'.
16. Walking across the Mohaine Desert for 16 days, Roland meets a nine-year-old boy who died in his own world, and ended up in Roland's world.

Answer: The Dark Tower I - The Gunslinger

This was the first book in the series of "The Dark Tower".
17. Four men who were boyhood friends meet each hunting season at a cabin in the woods of Maine. This year a stranger stumbles into their camp, and they find themselves in a horrifying struggle with a creature from another world.

Answer: Dreamcatcher

"Dreamcatcher" is one of the stories in which the town of Derry is mentioned. As we all know, Derry is where Pennywise the Clown lived in the sewers.
18. A quiet and gentle man is sentenced to death for a crime he didn't commit. The story revolves around life in prison, the prison guards, the inmates, and the 'special gift' this gentle man has.

Answer: The Green Mile

This was written as a 'serial thriller series'. There were six books in this series, and it was a first for Stephen King.
19. A husband and wife get lost while on vacation, and end up in a town filled with movie stars and singers. The only problem is...they are all dead.

Answer: You Know They Got a Hell of a Band

All of these answers are from the short story collection "Nightmares and Dreamscape". "You Know They Had a Hell of a Band" was one of my favorites from that collection.
20. Roland and his group continue their quest, and along the way they find another doorway that leads the boy, Jake, back to Roland. They then take a wild ride on a train.

Answer: The Dark Tower III - The Waste Lands

I used the first four of "The Dark Tower" books in this quiz. They (as a series) are in my top five Stephen King books.
