She admitted to placing the buttons on the eyes, as when she was in nursing school they put shells or coins on dead people's eyes back home, to help the dead pass over to the other side. She denied being responsible for the deaths.

In the epilogue of the book it transpires that she was in fact the killer, and has changed her name to Luz; she had got a new ID, and was working at Peachtree general hospital in Atlanta.
