Lord Saltire was the name of the son of Lord Holdernesse. Lord Holdernesse tried to hush up the scene and it was three days after the incident that Sherlock Holmes was notified. The boy seemed to have jumped out of the window on his own accord.

The house of Holdernesse was located in Hallamshire. It was not far from the Priory School, at which the incident had happened.

Dr. Thoneycroft Huxtable was the founder and principle of the Priory school. He had many children of noble birth under him in his school. However, he was sure that it had reached its peak after the inclusion of Lord Saltire into his school. Dr. Huxtable was so upset at the kidnapping that he consulted Mr. Sherlock Holmes even without consulting Lord Holdernesse himself.

Herr Heidegger is the name of the unfortunate German master who had done well in trying to rescue the boy but was brutally assaulted by Mr. Reuben Hayes. Heidegger had seen the boy jumping out of the window and had taken off to pursue him on his bicycle. Even though he was a well established cyclist it took him a while to get close to the carriage in which Lord Saltire was held.

James Wilder had used his bicycle to come from the house of Lord Holdernesse to the Priory school. The tracks of his Dunlop tire were observed by Mr. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson on the moor. The bicycle of the German master had a Palmer tire.

Answer: The Fighting Cock

Mr. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson end up in an inn run by Mr. Reuben Hayes, who is not happy to see the two men. Finally, he chases both of them away, calling them inferior spies. Mr. Reuben Hayes was an accomplice of James Wilder. Hayes was the driver of the carriage which was pursued by the German master who was killed by Hayes when he got too close.

Lord Holdernesse promises to give any man 5000 pounds if he will but state his son's whereabouts. He also promises another 1000 pounds for any one who tells of the man who keeps him in custody. Mr. Sherlock Holmes asks for his reward at the end of the story, something which he might not have done on another day.

Upon Mr. Sherlock Holmes's inquiry, Lord Holdernesse showed him the horse shoes which were shaped underneath like a cloven foot of iron. According to Lord Holdernesse, they were dug out of the moat of Lord Holdernesse's hall. They had once belonged to the Barons of Holdernesse of the Middle Ages.

These shoes kept tracks like those of a cow. This is what which put Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson off the track.

The son of Lord Holdernesse is hidden in the Fighting Cock inn. According to Lord Holdernesse, it was the plan of his other son, James Wilder. The kidnapped son, Lord Saltire, is placed under the care of Mrs. Hayes at the inn.

Lord Holdernesse had a mistress, who bore him a son. The mistress had died and the illegitimate son was kept in the house of Lord Holdernesse. Mr. James Wilder, who was that illegitimate son, was the kidnapper of Lord Saltire. After he was caught, however, he decided to go to Australia and leave the Lord Holdernesse and his son in peace.
