Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What name is the main character known as at the beginning of the novel?

Answer: Rohain

The main character's true name is Ashalind. She changes her name numerous time during the trilogy in order to escape and confuse her pursuers.
2. Ashalind's (the main characters) hair is naturally blonde yet she dyes it as often as she changes her name. What colour is her hair at the beginning of the story?

Answer: Black

She dyes her hair black at the end of the second novel and it remains black during this novel until she meets the Faeren prince in the castle Annath Gothallamor, who restores her hair to its natural blonde colour.
3. After regaining her memories, Ashalind journeys with her two lady's maids to find a gate which only she can open. What is the full name of the gate?

Answer: the gate of oblivion's kiss

The gate is an entrance to the fair realm where the Faeren reside; all the gates are thought to be shut. Not long ago, Ashalind slipped through the gate at the time of the closing and propped it open with three of her hairs. This made her the only person who can open the gate and also the only person that knows of its whereabouts.
4. On their journey to find the gate, Ashalind and her friends must journey through an old, wight infested forest. How do they make their journey through the forest?

Answer: By treetops

They journey through the tree tops in the ancient forest by a system of landings, ropes, flying-foxes, ladders and bridges. Up high in the trees they are safe from harm and wights on the forest floor.
5. During their journey, one of Ashalind's lady's maids falls prey to a powerful unseelie (evil) creature called a ganconer. What is the name of the lady's maid that the ganconer ensnares?

Answer: Viviana

The Ganconer is also known as a "love talker" who preys upon ladies. Viviana is not the same after meeting with him and begins to weave a shroud of nettles for she knows she will die yearning for the ganconer.
6. Ashalinds' friends are taken by an unseelie force known as "the wild hunt" after meeting with the ganconer. She follows them to the castle of the Faeren prince, knowing that they are bait for her as she is the one he wants, for she is the one who knows how to open the gate to the fair realm. Since the area around the castle makes it too dangerous to openly approach, how does Ashalind sneak in?

Answer: She borrows a magical cloak that turns her into a swan so she can fly in.

The magic cloak that Ashalind borrows belongs to the swan maiden, Whithiue. Ahsalind is extremely grateful for the cloak as it is Whithiue's prize possession and once she enters the castle, her main concern is how to get the cloak back to her.
7. When she enters the castle and rescues Viviana, Ashlind is soon caught by some of its inhabitants. She is taken to a room where she sees her betrothed sitting on a chair, although it is not truly him; who is it really?

Answer: Prince Morragan

It is not Thorn, her betrothed, on the chair but in fact the Faeren prince Morragan who is also known as "the raven". He believes he is Ashalind's first and only love and although she did consider his offer of staying with him when he asked her, in the fair realm, she never loved him and she loves Thorn.
8. From her meeting with Morragan Ashalind finds out the horrible truth about Thorn. What is it?

Answer: That Thorn is Faeren and is in fact Morragan's brother, Angarvar, the high king of the Faeren.

She once guessed that Thorn was one of the Faeren but dismissed this thought when she saw he wielded iron. The Faeren were thought to be repelled by iron but this is proven wrong when Morragan corrodes an iron buckle in his hand. Upon seeing Morragan's face she realises that thorn is not only Faeren, which she had suspected, but also, they are so similar they could only be brothers, meaning that her love is also her hate as she loathes all of the Faeren race.
9. When Ashalind is allowed to leave the castle Annath Gothallamor, it is to witness an epic battle between the Faeren king Angarvar and Prince Morragan. The victor of this battle is the king Angarvar, but what happens to the loser, Morragan?

Answer: He turns into a raven after being mortally wounded.

Morragan is wounded by Angarvar during the fight but as Ashalind runs to Angarvar, a wight jumps on her and attacks her. Morragan then saves her by smiting the wight and cutting it in two. To his surprise, this action causes his wound to open and it becomes life threatening. Being an immortal, Morragan cannot die so he transforms into a raven and flies off towards the horizon.

A sword marks his final resting place as a human and a field of wildflowers later grows where the battle was fought.
10. Ashalind is betrothed to Thorn for most of the book but does she ever marry him (in this story)?

Answer: No

Ashalind finds the gate and enters it without Thorn. Realising her mistake she exits again but seven years have past and she is believed dead. She is then tricked into marrying the "king-emperor" but on their wedding day Thorn/Angarvar appears and takes her in his arms.

She turns into a sea gull and he into an eagle and this is where the book ends. They never actually marry in the story. In the author's note it says that they return to the fair realm and marry there but this is never stated in the novel.
