Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How much did Holden Caulfield's red hunting hat cost?

Answer: "a buck"

When he tells his dormmate Ackley this, Ackley replies, "You got robbed." Holden keeps his hat with him throughout the book.
2. What is the name of Holden's sister?

Answer: Phoebe

He also has an older brother D.B., a writer in Hollywood, and a recently dead younger brother, Allie.
3. Where are Bernice, Laverne and Marty from?

Answer: Seattle, Washington

They are three women aged "around thirty or so" sitting at the table next to him in the "Lavender Room." He gets up and dances with each of them, but is disappointed because of the fact that they only seem to talk about movies, which he hates. After he dances with them, he fools them all by saying he saw Gary Cooper, the movie star, in the room.
4. What was the only subject that Holden doesn't flunk in school?

Answer: English

According to Holden, the only reason that he passed English is that he has already "had all that Beowulf and Lord Randal My Son stuff when I was at the Whooton School [his previous school]. I mean I didn't have to do any work in English at all hardly, except write compositions once in a while."
5. Which character calls Holden "Mac"?

Answer: the cab driver

There are two cab drivers in the story: the one who calls Holden Mac has a much smaller role than the other, "Horowitz". He asks both of them where the ducks go when the lagoon in Central Park freezes over.

Luce went to Whooton when Holden was there, and was his Student Adviser, and Holden thinks of him as an "intellectual".
7. What did Allie die of?

When he died, Holden broke all the windows in the garage with his fists and broke his hand. Allie loved poetry and had flaming red hair. He wrote down all his poems in green ink on his baseball mitt, which Holden writes an essay about for his roommate Stradlater's homework assignment.
8. What play is Holden's youngest sibling in?

Answer: A Christmas Pageant for Americans

His sister Phoebe plays Benedict Arnold.
9. What subject does (did) Mr. Spencer teach?
