"Am I supposed to say 'Where am I?' Where am I?" "This whole goddam house stinks of ghosts. I don't mind so much being haunted by a dead ghost, but I resent like hell being haunted by a half-dead one." "Bessie, you've sounded the missing keynote of the whole New Testament. Improper diet. Christ lived on cheeseburgers and Cokes." "Your facts are always either untrue or exaggerated, but you're never wrong." "Not really hate you but am constitutionally against strong, silent men." "Mother? What in Christ's name are you doing out there?" "I'm just so sick of pedants and conceited little tearer-downers I could scream." "My darling, isn't that a line from 'A Farewell to Arms'?" "Just because I'm so horribly conditioned to accept everybody else's values, and just because I like applause and people to rave about me, doesn't make it right." "I'm sick of everybody that wants to get somewhere, do something distinguished and all, be somebody interesting. It's disgusting."

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Not really hate you but am constitutionally against strong, silent men."

Answer: Franny

This sentence is part of Franny's letter that Lane was reading at the beginning of the book. This is the first time we get some insight into Franny (Frances) Glass, who wrote a letter to her boyfriend Lane Coutell. The letter explains that Franny is looking forward to going on a date with Lane, and toward the end, asks Lane whether he actually loves Franny.

The language that precedes the quote provided, with spelling mistakes and all, is: "Do you love me? You didn't say once in your horrible letter. I hate you when your being hopelessly super-male and retiscent."
2. "I'm just so sick of pedants and conceited little tearer-downers I could scream."

Answer: Franny

Lane meets Franny at the train station and they decide to go to lunch. Lane goes on and on about a paper he is writing, something in which Franny isn't really interested. Their lunch date doesn't seem to be going very well because Lane is acting rather detached and shows little interest in talking about Franny's life. Rather, he spends the whole time talking about his own academic thoughts and observations. Franny explains that she dislikes many of her peers in English class because they are pedantic, and continuously apologizes to Lane simply for bringing her thoughts up. Later in that conversation, Franny elaborates: "I'm sick of just liking people. I wish to God I could meet somebody I could respect."
3. "I'm sick of everybody that wants to get somewhere, do something distinguished and all, be somebody interesting. It's disgusting."

Answer: Franny

Franny says this to Lane during their contentious lunch at Sickler's. After coming back from crying in the bathroom, Franny criticizes Wally, one of Lane's friends. She opines that Wally represents a stereotypical college student who looks, dresses, and acts like everybody else.

This conversation is somewhat reminiscent of the people Holden Caulfield calls "phonies" in J.D. Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye". After revealing that she quit a play she was in, Franny says that she is tired of everyone's ego (including hers). Lane, who was not being very receptive to Franny's words, believes the issue may be that Franny is afraid of competing.
4. "Just because I'm so horribly conditioned to accept everybody else's values, and just because I like applause and people to rave about me, doesn't make it right."

Answer: Franny

Franny says this to push back on Lane's assertion that she's afraid to compete. She explains that quite the opposite is the case: she knows she is capable of "making a splash" and she doesn't like it. Franny barely drank her glass of milk and didn't eat her chicken sandwich, while Lane enjoyed frog legs and a salad.

The two then have a brief discussion about "The Way of a Pilgrim" before Franny excuses herself from the table once again.
5. "Am I supposed to say 'Where am I?' Where am I?"

Answer: Franny

The second time that Franny stands up to go to the bathroom, she doesn't make it there because she faints. She wakes up in the restaurant manager's office where Lane was sitting by her side. Lane asks if she is OK and once again remarks that she is acting somewhat strangely. Franny is worried that they will be late for the game that Lane had been talking about throughout lunch. Even though Lane had been bringing up how soon they would have to leave to make the game in time, he now tells Franny not to worry about it.
6. "My darling, isn't that a line from 'A Farewell to Arms'?"

Answer: Zooey

We learn more about Franny's brother, Zooey, in the novella named after him. Zooey is an actor whose talents were evident from a very young age. This particular quote is from a script that Zooey was practicing in the tub. He was playing the role of Rick, who was talking to a girl called Tina. He is interrupted by his mother, who wanted to come into the bathroom.
7. "Mother? What in Christ's name are you doing out there?"

Answer: Zooey

Zooey is rather disturbed about getting interrupted by his mother, Bessie, while he was in the shower. His mom points out that he has been there for over 45 minutes, which makes sense since he was practicing a script. She is there to give him a tube of toothpaste, as she doesn't want him using a certain powder that could damage his tooth enamel. Zooey grows increasingly frustrated because his mother won't leave the bathroom as he is still in the tub!
8. "Bessie, you've sounded the missing keynote of the whole New Testament. Improper diet. Christ lived on cheeseburgers and Cokes."

Answer: Zooey

Still having a conversation in the bathroom, Zooey and his mom now talk about Franny. Bessie says she would like to know more about what's going on with Franny's life, specifically saying that she doesn't know if she's eating well. Zooey sarcastically responds to his mother's comments about Franny's nourishment, saying that the Crucifixion was probably due to Christ's "improper diet".
9. "Your facts are always either untrue or exaggerated, but you're never wrong."

Answer: Zooey

Bessie finally leaves the bathroom so that Zooey can get out of the tub in peace. As he begins shaving, he is not surprised to see his mother barge into the bathroom again. While shaving, he directs multiple sarcastic jabs at her, such as "Come in, come in!" and "It isn't often we have visitors at our little chapel". Bessie thinks it might be a good idea to get Franny in touch with Waker, who is now a priest.

They also talk about Lane Coutell, Franny's boyfriend, and exchange opinions about him. Zooey seems to think that Lane is "a fake" and accurately predicts (given what we learned in the short story "Franny") that Lane would be more concerned about getting to the football game in time than listening to Franny.
10. "This whole goddam house stinks of ghosts. I don't mind so much being haunted by a dead ghost, but I resent like hell being haunted by a half-dead one."

Answer: Zooey

Zooey's conversation with his mother grows in intensity as they begin to touch a more sensitive topic: the death by suicide of his brother Seymour. Though the circumstances of his death are not explicitly described in "Franny and Zooey", other J.D. Salinger works expand on this and other issues around the Glass family. Zooey goes on to say that both Franny and he are "freaks" because of how they were raised by their older siblings.
