A non school-approved group called The Vigils rules the school Trinity. They order the students to do things that often cause chaos, but the adults never try to do anything to stop it.

Raymond shows him a project the he's been working on. It's a guillotine. He puts a cabbage in and breaks it, to show that it's real. Then he flips the safety switch so a person can stick their head in and be ok.

Obie convinces Raymond to perform a magic act for the school and use the guillotine, and he even volunteers himself to be his assistant. He enlists The Vigils to assign someone the task of being the person to stick their head in the guillotine. Before every assignment, Archie has to draw a marble from a box and, if it's a certain color, he will have to do it. It used to be rigged so that Archie never drew that color, but Obie steals it ahead of time and riggs it so that Archie will have to do it.

When it's time to perform the magic trick, Obie plans to forget to flip the safety switch, but it turns out that there is a special safety lock on it. Afterwards, Archie points out that everyone went along with him and nobody ever tried to stop him, so they aren't really any better than he is. Also, Raymond realizes what Obie was trying to do and won't be his friend anymore.
