Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Vampire Federation developed several drugs that aided the vampires, one of which was called Solazal. What did Solazal do?

Answer: Allowed the vampires to go out in daylight.

The effects of Solazal only lasted for twelve hours. The drug allowed the vampires to hold regular daytime jobs and blend in better with the humans. Some vampires, like the Trads (short for Traditionals), opposed the use of Solazal.
2. Where was Joel when he first woke up after being turned into a vampire?

Answer: Romania

Joel woke up half-buried in the snow outside Vâlcanul castle in Romania. He was left there by Alex after the battle with Gabriel. When he awoke, he slowly began to remember details of the battle that had taken place at the castle. Joel had been shot and mortally wounded, so Alex turned him into a vampire because that was the only way she could save him.
3. The Vampire Federation was created in 1984 to control the vampires' behavior and keep them from being noticed. What did they develop to handle any vampires that didn't obey the laws?

Answer: Nosferol

Nosferol was an anti-vampire nerve toxin that ravaged the bodies of the vampires and destroyed them. Agents working for the Federation had bullets containing Nosferol to handle rogue vampires that didn't follow the rules set by the Federation. The rules were simple: A vampire must never harm a human, a vampire must never turn a human, and a vampire must never love a human.

The Federation also had a method of exterminating any traitors or agents that did not obey the command of the Federation by lethally injecting them with Nosferol.
4. Gabriel Stone was the leader of the Trads, the group that rebelled against the Federation. Though many believed that he was the ultimate leader of the group, who was he actually working for?

Answer: The Übervampyrs

The Übervampyrs were not like the humanoid vampires. They lived in underground caves under Siberia. They wore robes, were bald, and had pointed ears. They also had worm-like tongues, and would shoot black venom at their enemies. They came from another planet after their planet was destroyed by meteors.

They actually created the humanoid vampires so that they could walk amongst the humans and prepare the world for the takeover of the Übervampyrs.
5. The Cross of Ardaich was thrown from the battlements of the castle of Vâlcunal after the battle between Gabriel's rebels and the Federation. Who found the pieces of the cross at the bottom of the mountain?

Answer: Chloe Dempsey

Chloe was a college pentathlete that went on a ski trip to the Romanian mountains with some of her friends. While skiing, she came across the broken pieces of the cross and kept them to take them back to her father, who was a museum curator. Chloe became a vital character in the events of the book after her father was murdered and she set out to track down the man responsible for his death.
6. Ash was a human that began doing the dirty work for Gabriel. What did Gabriel promise Ash in return for his service?

Answer: He would turn him into a vampire.

At the beginning of the book, Ash entered a church and brutally murdered all of the people inside and drank their blood. When the police arrived, he told them that he was a vampire, though he really just wanted to be one. After he was taken to prison, he slaughtered his cellmates and was put in solitary confinement. Gabriel needed a human to get the Cross of Ardaich for him, since it was fatal to vampires. Gabriel learned of Ash's existence, and he and two of his companions broke Ash out of jail. Ash was promised that he would be made into a vampire after he completed all of the tasks that Gabriel asked of him, namely taking the cross into the Federation's headquarters and destroying the vampire agents.
7. Errol Knightly was a true vampire hunter.

Answer: False

Errol Knightly was the author that wrote "They Lurk Amongst Us" and also created a website where he sold vampire protection kits. Dec found him and went to stay with him at his castle so that he could learn all Errol knew about hunting vampires. It was the old housekeeper that first told Dec that Errol was a hoax and didn't know anything about vampire hunting.

This became abundantly clear when the castle was attacked by three vampires and none of the tricks that Errol had taught Dec worked against them.
8. Which of the following did the Übervampyrs have in their garden?

Answer: Telescope

The Übervampyrs had a telescope and the Ecliptic Portal in their underground garden. The Ecliptic Portal used reflective mirrors to let them see if it was nighttime and safe to venture out into the world above. The telescope had a lever that opened a hatch and allowed them to observe the stars. According to Gabriel, this stemmed from a desire to return to their destroyed home planet.
9. What organizational part of the Federation did Alex work for?

Answer: VIA

The VIA was the Vampire Intelligence Agency and was based in London. The VIA was responsible for investigating any suspicious vampire activity and meting out the punishment to rogue vampires. VIV (Very Important Vampires) was also an acronym used in the book to refer to those few privileged vampires that had access to all the inner parts of the VIA headquarters.
10. What profession was the vampire Baxter Burnett?

Answer: Actor

Baxter Burnett was a vampire that Alex had to deal with because of his disregard for the Federation's rules. He was a very famous actor that was well-known for his "Beserker" movies. He had been offered a role in an upcoming movie, but was told by the Federation to turn it down since his never-aging appearance was starting to be noticeable to the humans.

He blatantly disregarded the Federation's orders and accepted the role. When Alex went after him, he had just killed a critic that had badmouthed him in the magazines.

After his encounter with Alex, he escaped and joined the ranks of Gabriel Stone's rebellion.
