Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Baby chickens are called chicks and males are called roosters, but what are female chickens called?

Answer: Hens

Young hens that are less than a year old can also be called pullets. Though chickens lay one egg at a time, they will usually wait until they have several eggs before they sit on them to incubate them (heat them up to make them hatch).
2. Though we usually think of cows as the kind that give milk and moo, which of the following animals also has a female that is called a cow?

Answer: Alligator

Female alligators are called cows and the males are called bulls. The babies are known as hatchlings. Alligator cows take good care of their babies. They will carry them to water after they hatch and protect them for several weeks until they become independent.
3. Male deer have several names, including buck, stag, and hart, but what is another name for a female deer?

Answer: Doe

Does are sometimes referred to as hinds, and baby deer are called calfs or fawns. Does will usually have one or two fawns at a time and they will care for the young deer without the help of the bucks.
4. In the ferret family, babies are born in litters and called kits, but what is their mamma called?

Answer: Jill

Female ferrets are called jills and the males are called hobs. A jill will nurse her babies and take care of them for about six to eight weeks until they are old enough to leave her. The hob doesn't help raise the kits.
5. Which of the following is the name of a female fox?

Answer: Vixen

Baby foxes are called kits or pups. While the vixen is pregnant with the babies, she will stay in or around the den and the male fox will bring her food. Both parents will bring their pups food and protect them from harm.
6. Which primates native to the island of Madagascar have males that are called dictators and females that are called princesses?

Answer: Lemurs

Lemur babies are known as infants. Though lemurs usually only have one baby at a time, it is common for them to have twins. The princess, or mamma lemur, will build a nest for her babies in the treetops and will carry them in her mouth as she looks for food.
7. Several mammas of the animal world are called jills, but which of the following is NOT one of them?

Answer: Seahorse

Opossums, wallabies, and wombats are all marsupials. The females of their species are called jills and the babies are called joeys. A female seahorse is called a seamare while the male is a seastallion. The seastallions are actually the ones that carry the babies until they are born, but neither the male nor the female seahorse care for the young after they are born.
8. Lambs are baby sheep and they are cared for by which of the following mammas?

Answer: Ewe

Male sheep are known as rams. Most of the time lambs are born by themselves or as twins. Sheep are called lambs until they are a year old, but they only drink milk for about four months, then they start eating grass.
9. We normally use a pen to write with, but pen is also the name for the female of which animal?

Answer: Swan

Female swans are pens, males are cobs, and babies are cygnets. One male and one female swan will pair up for a very long time, sometimes even for life. The males actually help to build the nest and incubate the eggs.
10. Female red pandas, pigs, skunks, and sea lions are called sows, but which of the following sea creatures also has a female called a sow?

Answer: Jellyfish

Depending on the species of jellyfish, some females create pouches on their oral arms to hold the eggs, while others keep them in their mouths. Once jellyfish hatch they are on their own without any care from either the mother or father.
