Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Of which area of Fellmarch did Han used to be the streetlord?

Answer: Ragmarket

Han Alister is a sixteen year old boy who had previously been the leader of a street gang, the Raggers, in his home area of Ragmarket. He lives with his mother and young sister, Mari. To protect his family, he is no longer part of the gang, now headed by a new streetlord called Cat.

In the neighboring area, Southbridge, is the Raggers' rival gang, the Southies, headed by Shiv. Although he is no longer a street thug, the finger is pointed toward Han when several Southies turn up tortured and murdered, and so he is on the run from the Queen's Guards even more than usual.
2. What is Han's clan name?

Answer: Hunts Alone

Han is fostered each summer by the clans at Marisa Pines Camp, and here he is named Hunts Alone. Each clan member's name changes periodically to reflect their traits and activities, and Han is given a clan name although he is not of the people. He is very close with Fire Dancer and his mother Willo, lodging with them when visiting. Han finds it calming in Marisa Pines, a welcome break from the stresses of his life at home, where he struggles to make enough money to feed his family now that he has quit the Raggers.

He begins to become worried when it seems that Fire Dancer is ill, but no one will give him an explanation.
3. Which of the clan people turns out to have been fathered by a wizard?

Answer: Fire Dancer

When Han and Dancer have a run-in with three wizards, Han is confused as it seems the wizards know of Dancer, but wizards are not allowed to set foot in the land of the clans. Dancer seems unusually aggressive toward the wizards, even regarding the long-standing hatred between them and the clan people. Furthermore, one of the wizards makes a reference to the fact that Dancer has no father.

A long time later, when it transpires that Dancer is showing magical powers and that this is what is causing the "sickness", Han discovers that Willo was attacked by a wizard and became pregnant with Dancer, who has inherited the gift from his father. Because wizards are not allowed upon the clan land, and in fact one sect, the Demonai, exist to protect the land from wizards, Dancer is effectively exiled to a school in the south to learn how to control his magic.
4. At the clan naming ceremony, who becomes a Demonai warrior?

Answer: Digging Bird

As they turn sixteen, the clan people receive a new name and are sponsored for their chosen vocation. Digging Bird has chosen to become a Demonai warrior, much to Han's surprise, as they are an elite group, legendary for their strength and survival skills. Bird is sponsored by the famous Reid Nightwalker and his companion, Shilo; in contrast to those being sponsored for other vocations, she does not receive her new name immediately, but will do so in the coming months if she passes the Demonai tests successfully, when she goes off traveling with the Demonai.
5. What trade does Willo offer to teach Han?

Answer: Healing

Willo is Dancer's mother, the matriarch of Marisa Pines Camp and a healer. She is well known beyond the clan lands for her skill in healing, and Han frequently collects plants and herbs for her to use in her remedies. Willo also weaves rugs. She heals Han after he is robbed and beaten by the Queen's Guards in the city.

When he learns that Dancer is going off to wizard school and Bird will be traveling with her fellow Demonai warriors, Han asks Willo for money to enrol in the warrior school to be closer to them; she refuses and instead offers him a job at Marisa Pines under her apprenticeship, but he refuses.
6. Han is the one who kills his rival, Shiv.

Answer: False

To throw the Guards off his trail, Han fakes his death by dipping his clothing in blood behind a butcher's and laying them out by the river, carving into the mud his alias, Cuffs, along with the words "DUBL CROSSR" to imply that he has been killed by the gangs. He is then followed by what turns out to be three demons, looking for his nemesis, Shiv. After he escapes, he bumps into none other than Shiv himself, who demands that Han call off the demons. Han evades saying directly that he is not responsible for the demons' presence, and Shiv ends up kneeling in allegiance to him!

Later, Han realizes why they were after Shiv: in the confrontation with the young wizards he had with Dancer, he gave his name as Shiv to avoid giving his true identity, and now they are chasing Shiv to retrieve the amulet that Han stole from the wizards. It is too late, however, and Shiv ends up tortured and killed by the demons just like the other Southies before him.
7. What floral nickname does Raisa's father give her?

Answer: Briar Rose

Raisa ana'Marianna is the princess heir of the queendom. Her mother Marianna is the current queen, her sister Mellony the next heir after Raisa, and her father is Averill Demonai, lord of the Demonai clan people. Raisa is a stubborn girl who has had a taste of freedom in the three years she lived with her father's people in Demonai Camp, and is now struggling with the constraints of royalty.

She is close to her father, even though he is not at the castle frequently, and he calls her by the name Briar Rose, given to her by the clans. According to Averill, this is because of her beauty as well as her "many thorns".
8. Whom does Lord Bayar try to force Raisa to marry on the night of her nameday party?

Answer: Micah Bayar

Raisa has had a casual relationship with Micah, knowing that they can never actually marry because marriage between queens and wizards is forbidden by the covenant, the Naéming. However, after her nameday party, Micah tells Raisa that her mother wishes to see her, and she finds herself at an impromptu wedding for her and Micah!

Lord Bayar, High Wizard and Micah's father, has been influencing Queen Marianna to his own ends, and has arranged the wedding to join his family to the royal one. Micah performs magic on Raisa to calm her down so that she will go through with the ceremony, but thankfully she is wearing her grandmother's ring which protects her against the spell. When she realizes that she cannot talk her mother out of the wedding, she asks leave to go to her rooms to get the briar rose necklace her father gave her, to wear during the ceremony as he cannot be there. Abetted by her nurse, Magret, Raisa escapes the castle and goes into exile.
9. When the Queen's Guard sets fire to his house, Han's mother and sister are killed.

Answer: True

When Han returns home after a month at Marisa Pines Camp, he finds his sister Mari sick with fever. Needing money to pay a healer, Han visits some dealers in the city in order to sell the amulet that he stole from the wizards. Unfortunately, the customer that the dealer finds for the amulet is the High Wizard himself, Lord Bayar. When Han refuses to hand it over for nothing, the wizard threatens his family and home.

By the time Han escapes and makes it back to his neighborhood, the house is already in flames. He is told that the Queen's Guard set the fire, no doubt under the increasing influence of Lord Bayar. Han knows that his family couldn't have escaped with Mari so ill, and after the flames die down, he finds the charred bodies of his mother and sister, taking Mam's locket and Mari's book with him as memories.
10. Who is the descendant of the Demon King?

Answer: Han

The stories that Han and his peers have been told about the Demon King are horrific, that he kidnapped and raped the Queen Hanalea and broke the world with his strong magic. However, when Han is visiting an old man of the clans, Lucius, who is blind, the latter senses the magic amulet that Han has with him and tells him a different story of how the events transpired. Lucius claims that Hanalea, although engaged to a Bayar, fell in love with a boy called Alger Waterlow, who turned out to be the Demon King himself. They ran away together, and Alger destroyed the world in defense of the couple against the wizard houses.

Han does not believe him until much later, when the clans tell him that Hanalea did not only have the one child whose descendants form the line of queens, but had twins, the boy inheriting magic powers from Alger. Lucius Frowsley confesses that he is the man Hanalea was made to marry after Alger's death, making him over a thousand years old. There is only one descendant remaining of the boy child who has inherited the magic gifts, and that is Han, much to his shock.
