Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of the Walkers said that he had once seen the end of a Long Walk?

Answer: Stebbins

Stebbins said that he saw the end of a Long Walk when he was thirteen, and that it happened right in front of him. His father was able to get him there, and it's later revealed that his father was the Major.
2. Which of the following facts was NOT true about Scramm?

Answer: He had obtained an equivalent high school education

Scramm was a bit of a fascination to the others as he was married and his wife was pregnant. He seemed the most likely to win, but he caught a bad case of pneumonia. Scramm bought his ticket with Mike, one of the Indian brothers, who had a leg cramp. Scramm never finished his high school education.

The other Walkers decided that whoever won the Long Walk would do something for Scramm's wife and child.
3. What odd food item did McVries have in his pack for the Long Walk?

Answer: Raw hamburger

McVries had brought along some raw hamburger for the Long Walk, claiming that it provided good energy. Everybody else thought it was rather disgusting, but Garraty wished he had brought some too.
4. What unpleasant thing did Barkovitch say he was going to do to the rest of the Walkers when everything was over?

Answer: He would dance on their graves

Barkovitch first told a reporter that, "...he planned to dance on a lot of graves." It became a refrain for him whenever he got angry with someone. Barkovitch obviously was not popular with the rest of the Walkers, and no one liked him. He ended up tearing his own throat out.
5. When Garraty and McVries were talking about how they got picked for the Long Walk, was McVries actually a backup Walker?

Answer: Yes

Garraty had been picked right away to be a Walker, but McVries was the twelfth backup. Twelve original Walkers backed out, making McVries the very last one in the Long Walk.
6. Which one of the Walkers was planning to write a book about the Long Walk if he won?

Answer: Harkness

Harkness had wanted to write a book on the Long Walk. He felt that a book from the insider's perspective would be interesting. He spent most of his time in the Long Walk taking notes. However, he didn't live to write his book.
7. During the story, Garraty mentions Reggie Cotter, the only person from Maine to have won the Long Walk at that time. What happened to Reggie Cotter after he won?

Answer: He died a week later from a blood clot on his brain

Reggie Cotter had hemorrhaged in one eye during the Long Walk and was half blind. He died a week later from a blood clot on his brain. There was a street in Maine named after him.
8. On the first night of the Long Walk, Garraty encountered a Walker wearing a trenchcoat who had gone into complete withdrawal from everything around him. This Walker's number was 47.

Answer: False

Garraty's number was 47; the Walker in the trenchcoat was number 45. Garraty wanted to know his name, but number 45 didn't answer and was shot soon after that. The reader never learns anything more about that particular character.
9. How did McVries get the scar on his face?

Answer: His girlfriend cut him with a letter-opener.

McVries's girlfriend cut his face with a letter-opener after they got in a fight. She cared more about making money than being with him, and he still seemed to have angry feelings toward her, even though he said she was nothing to him.
10. Who were the final four Walkers?

Answer: Baker, Garraty, McVries, Stebbins

Baker was the first of the four to buy his ticket. He had a very bad bloody nose due to a hemorrhage. McVries later decided to sit down and was shot. Garraty and Stebbins were the final two Walkers, and Stebbins died before they shot him. Garraty won the Long Walk, but he saw a dark figure ahead and ran to it.

The reader is left to imagine what happened to Garraty. It's a disturbing end to a very interesting story!
