Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Sins of Our Fathers" opened with Filip Nagata helping in the defence of the town of Beta from the large local fauna. Why were the monsters attacking Beta?

Answer: The town was in the monsters' migration path

The monsters were as tall as buildings and could flatten the town's walls made from ship hulls. They were not violent, but would trample. The goal of the defence team was to deflect the rampaging monsters around the town, not to stop or kill any of them. The defenders used torches to scare the monsters.
2. During the monster attack on Beta, Jandro, head of the maintenance team, became a hero by doing what?

Answer: Jumping atop and riding a monster

The goal was to keep the monsters out of the town, but if any got in, a magnetic cannon was supposed to fire. One monster did get through, but there was no cannon fire, so Jandro chased down the monster, got atop it, and steered it into the town's plaza where it would do the least damage until the cannon was fixed and able to kill the monster.
3. How many people lived in Emerling-Voss Permanent Settlement Beta?

Answer: 400

Beta had 436 people in it. Alpha had over 1000, and there were a few ships around the gas giants. All together, the entire solar system had fewer than 2000 humans, and Beta was cut off from even them. The youngest person in the town was in their mid-twenties, so if humans were going to continue to exist on Jannah, they were going to need to start thinking about reproduction.
4. The scientists of Beta believed they could avoid the monsters by moving the town. The maintenance team thought it would be better to build defences. When put to a vote, what did the town chose?

Answer: Move the town

The original site had been chosen without knowing about the migratory patterns of the monsters. One of the tertiary sites was only 500 metres away, with most of the same benefits. Jandro pointed out that the new site might have its own unknown problems, and that the move would put unnecessary wear and tear on the existing structures and equipment, for which they no longer had replacements.
5. Who was the administrator of the town of Beta on the planet Jannah?

Answer: Nami, daughter of Anna Volovodov (from Book 3, "Abaddon's Gate")

Nami was Anna's infant daughter in "Abaddon's Gate". In "The Sins of Our Fathers", she was old enough to have mostly grey hair. Everyone in Beta called her Nami Veh because, "Her last name was a mouthful of Russian that sounded like a puppy falling down stairs."

Anna had died on Jannah a few years before the novella, as a well-liked leader in the community.
6. Filip Nagata and his supervisor, Mose, were at Beta for a temporary job as electrical technicians when the Ring Gate network shut down. What was Mose's problem?

Answer: Denial - Mose was acting as if the union still existed and would eventually contact them

Mose insisted that communications would be reestablished and that everything would go back to normal. He tried to enforce union rules, told Filip to not get mixed up in local drama because they "were just subcontractors," and threatened to write up Filip when he disobeyed.

Mose broke down and faced reality after finding the still someone had made.
7. To whom on Jannah did Filip reveal that he was the son of Marco Inaros, the man who had killed half of Earth?

Answer: No one

Filip had had a troubled time since he was last seen in "Babylon's Ashes". He'd cycled through many names and jobs (and even one group marriage), but always came back to Filip Nagata. He occasionally tried to address his own panic attacks, but in forty years, he did not tell a single person who he used to be.
8. To build the town's defences, some of Jandro's maintenance people pilfered equipment from the scientists. When Leward, the lead scientist, told them to return it, what did they say?

Answer: "Or else what?"

Yuri asked, "Or else what?" What was Leward going to do when they didn't obey him? Leward tried to take the cart back himself, but was pushed to the ground.

This question stuck with Filip. There were no longer any corporations, unions, governments, or militaries to back up social structures. When the town voted to move, Jandro and maintenance didn't help, and instead implemented their own plan to build defences anyway. In a meeting with Jandro, Leward, and Nami, Filip asked about the vote. Nami said they were past that now. When Nami asked the two sides to work together, Jandro said, "As long as we're working on the right things, they absolutely will."

Jandro was a strong, charismatic man with a team of sycophants with no one able to stand against him. It reminded Filip of his father.
9. How did Filip Nagata kill Jandro, the head of Beta's maintenance team?

Answer: Electrocuted Jandro with a capacitor

Filip was an electrical technician. He and Mose were responsible for setting up the town's power grid and high-voltage equipment. He took it upon himself to handle the low-quality large capacitors of the food production units, which had killed untrained people.

Before going to Jandro, Filip grabbed one of the capacitors. He tossed the capacitor to Jandro, and told him to open the back port to look at something. When Jandro electrocuted himself, the rest of maintenance was so stunned that Filip managed to walk thirty metres before they caught up and beat him within an inch of his life.

18 hours later, Jandro was officially dead, and Filip was Beta's first murderer.
10. What was Filip's punishment for killing Jandro, the head of Beta's maintenance team?

Answer: Exile

Nami Veh negotiated with the town. The maintenance crew wanted to kill Filip, but Nami was not going to let capital punishment be established on her watch, and incarceration was too resource-intensive. Instead, Filip was given a blanket, a water filter, a solar cell, and a portable food producer.

He was exiled with the chance to return in five years to petition to be let back into the town.
