Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Ranofer's dream?

Answer: To become an apprentice to Zau the Goldsmith

Ranofer is always dreaming about what it would be like to become as good a goldsmith as Zau. He would make cups and jewelry for the palaces of Pharaoh.
2. On which street does Ranofer live?

Answer: The Street of the Crooked Dog

Ranofer walks every day to the Street of the Goldsmiths, which is the location of Rekh's Goldsmith shop.
3. What is the name of Ranofer's harsh, mean, and cruel older half-brother?

Answer: Gebu

Thutra (Ranofer's father) and his first wife had Gebu. She died, Thutra remarried and they had Ranofer.
4. Why does Ranofer live with Gebu?

Answer: Both his parents are dead

The book never really explains how his parents died. It could have been from old age or just from the living conditions of that time.
5. How is the gold being stolen from Rekh the Goldsmith?

Answer: Small ingots are being carried out in wineskins

The ingot was a perfect size to fit into the wineskins that Ibni gives Ranofer to take home every day to Gebu.
6. After working as a stonecutter for a while, Ranofer begins to like it better than working with gold.

Answer: False

After working as a stonecutter, Ranofer wants more than ever to be free of Gebu and become an apprentice to Zau the Goldsmith.
7. What is the name of Ranofer's joke-telling best friend?

Answer: Heqet

Heqet is my favorite character, because of his wit. He is always trying to cheer Ranofer up and be friends with him. I love that quality!
8. What makes Ranofer think that Gebu is a tomb robber?

Answer: He finds an old pharaoh's goblet in Gebu's clothes chest

One night when Gebu is away Ranofer sneaks into his bedroom and finds a golden goblet. He knows that the only way Gebu could have gotten it was to have stolen in from an old Pharaoh's tomb.
9. What evidence does Ranofer give that convinces Queen Tiy that he has seen tomb robbers in the tomb of her parents?

Answer: He tells her the object that was leaning on the north wall of the burial chamber

How Ranofer remembers that the pharaoh's oaken staff was the object on the north wall was amazing. I would not have been able to remember...especially if I had just gone through what Ranofer had.
10. What does Ranofer ask Queen Tiy for at the end of the book?

Answer: A donkey

I loved it when he asked for a donkey. He could have asked for anything in the world, but he chose a donkey so he could be like his friend the Ancient. He wanted to cut down papyrus stalks, mount them on the donkey's back, and sell them to the river boatmen.

Then save enough money to become an apprentice at Zau's. How humble was that?! I also loved Queen Tiy's answer: "Give this boy the finest donkey in all Egypt. And tell Zau the goldsmith that the first necklace made by the hands of his new pupil must belong to no one but Queen Tiy."
