Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the salt mines in which Celaena Sardothien was sentenced to work for the rest of her life?

Answer: Endovier

Celaena was in Endovier for a year prior the start of the book. The main reason why Celaena is in Endovier is that she is an assassin who was betrayed on her last job. She is also the only prisoner to nearly escape, after killing the guards that killed the only person who was kind to her. Most slaves die of the cold and starvation.
2. While standing on her balcony, Celaena hears a girl making rude comments about her and pushes a flower pot of the balcony, nearly hitting the girl. Who is this girl?

Answer: Kaltain Rompier

Celaena has an instant dislike of Kaltain when they first meet. Kaltain has an obsession with the prince and believes that she will be his wife. She also sees Celaena as a threat. Kaltain is ignorant as to the real identity of Celaena and knows her as Lillian. It is also thanks to Kaltain, that Celaena and Nehemia became friends, based on their mutual dislike of her.
3. Why was Celaena retrieved from Endovier by the prince and his men?

Answer: She was to compete in a competition to become the King's Champion

If successful she would have to serve as the King's Champion for four years, then she would have her freedom. It was also revealed by the prince that he only chose her to get back at his father. She is the Queen of the Underworld and the most feared assassin in the kingdom. Agreeing to the prince's term meant that she was one step closer to freedom - something she never had before.
4. Cain, Duke Perrington's Champion, is a very strong man from the mountains. How does he acquire his impressive strength?

Answer: He summons a dark beast and sacrifices other champions, gaining their strength

Duke Perrington was controlling Cain and commanded him to do all those horrible things. Cain summoned a ridderak through a Wyrdgate, this evil creature was killing the Champions and giving their strength to Cain. Nehemia was at first suspected to be the killer. Celaena killed this creature with King Gavin sword.
5. How was it to be determined which champions would fight in the final duel?

Answer: They had to complete a series of tests.

The final duel had four participants: Celaena, Cain, Grave and Renault. The champions had to complete a series of tests, to showcase their skills and advance to the next test. The champion that performed the worst would be sent home. Celaena had no choice but to win, or else she would have been sent back to Endovier.
6. Why was Celaena unable to fight at her best in the final duel against Cain?

Answer: She was poisoned.

Duke Perrington used his black ring to make Kaltain poison Celaena's wine. By poisoning Celaena, Kaltain believed she was saving the prince. After the final duel Kaltain accidentally confessed what she had done and was put in prison. The poison made Celaena see nightmarish creatures; luckily, she was saved by Elena.
7. "Blood ties can't be broken." Who said the previous words to Celaena?

Answer: Queen Elena

This line is a very important statement in the first book and has a deeper meaning, later in the series. This is a reference to Celaena's past. It is basically Elena's way of telling or reminding Celaena that they are distantly related.
8. What was odd about the King's trip when he came back to Rifhold?

Answer: He was alone, no one returned with him.

When the King returned, he was alone and it was strange that so many people could disappear but the King of all people returned. It is suspected that the King may have sacrificed those people in a similar way that Cain did. In the end of the book it's confirmed that the King does have some sort of magic (the black ring).
9. King Gavin Havilliard was the husband of Queen Elena and had a legendary sword. This sword was used to kill a ridderak by Celaena. What is its name?

Answer: Damaris

This blade is found in Elena's tomb, under the castle. Celaena found Damaris when she was exploring the tunnels, connected to the door, behind the tapestry in her room. This sword was used in the wars against the Dark Lord hundreds of years ago.
10. Who killed Cain when he tried to kill Celaena from behind?

Answer: Chaol Westfall

Cain was the first person Chaol ever killed. He was ashamed of his lack of control. Chaol and Celaena's relationship started with them hating each other, but grew into friendship. Chaol had romantic feelings towards Celaena but never acted on them. There were times he acted jealous. He wanted to protect her from Cain and even Dorian.
