Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "In the greenest of our valleys" there was a palace. What tenants of the palace are mentioned at the beginning of the poem?

Answer: good angels

"In the greenest of our valleys
By good angels tenanted"
Unfortunately, this didn't last for long. Prince Prospero and Trippetta are from various Poe short stories.
2. "Never seraph spread a pinion Over fabric half so fair!" What is a seraph and a pinion?

Answer: an angel and a wing

Seraphs are angels of the highest order, thought to surround God's throne.
3. What type of banners flew on the roof of the palace?

Answer: all of these

"Banners yellow, glorious, golden,
On its roof did float and flow."
4. What would wanderers in the valley see, if they looked through the windows of the palace?

Answer: spirits moving to the music of a lute

"Spirits moving musically,
To a lute's well tuned law,"
Everything seemed pretty idyllic...at least for the time being.
5. Whose duty was it to sing for the king?

Answer: a troop of echoes

I believe "echoes", in this case, means a group of people who praise the king and cater to his every whim.
6. What "assailed the monarch's high estate"?

Answer: evil things in robes of sorrow

I think "robes of sorrow" is a brilliant description.
7. What color did the windows of the palace turn, after the invasion?

Answer: red

"And travelers now, within that valley,
Through the red-litten windows see"
8. What presently inhabits the palace?

Answer: vast forms, that move fantastically

The "vast forms" leave a lot to the imagination. I think that is a good thing because every reader can interpret it for him/herself.
9. The last two lines are my favorite. They are...

Answer: "A hideous throng rush out forever/And laugh-but smile no more."

Imagine something laughing but not smiling...what a hideous visual!
10. This may be tough, admittedly. Which Poe story includes the poem, "The Haunted Palace"?

Answer: "The Fall of the House of Usher"

Usher and his boyhood friend read this poem and it was considered an analogy for Roderick Usher's failing sanity.
