Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the opening of the play what treat has Algernon prepared for Lady Bracknell?

Answer: Cucumber sandwiches

All these foods are mentioned in the play but cucumber sandwiches are Lady Bracknell's favorite. She doesn't get to try them because Algernon eats them all before she arrives.
2. What relation is Cecily to Jack Worthing?

Answer: His ward

Cecily is the daughter of the late Mr Thomas Cardew who adopted Jack Worthing when he discovered him in a handbag given to him in mistake for his own. Under the terms of Cardew's will, Cecily is Jack's ward until she is 35.
3. Who is Bunbury?

Answer: Algernon's imaginary invalid friend

Algernon pretends to have a sick friend in the country so he has an excuse to leave town whenever he likes. Jack has invented a wild younger brother called Ernest who lives in London. Jack then has an excuse to leave the country and go to London whenever he wants.
4. At which London train station was the late Mr Cardew mistakenly given a bag containing a baby boy?

Answer: Victoria

Cardew gives the infant the name of Worthing because he had a ticket for that place in his pocket. "Worthing is a place in Sussex. It is a seaside resort." You can still travel by train from London, Victoria to Worthing
5. Which subject does Jack Worthing insist Cecily must study whenever he leaves for town?

Answer: German

All these subjects are mentioned in the play but Jack always insists Cecily must study German - there is no explanation why. Cecily dislikes speaking German because, "It isn't at all a becoming language. I know perfectly well that I look quite plain after my German lesson."
6. Cecily is allowed to skip which chapter in her Political Economy textbook?

Answer: The fall of the Rupee

Miss Prism feels the chapter is "too sensational" for a young girl to read. Keynes was only 11 years old when Wilde's play was first performed.
7. Why does Gwendolen never travel without her diary?

Answer: To have something sensational to read in the train.

When Gwendolen and Cecily both claim to be engaged to Ernest Worthing they show each other entries in their diaries as proof.
8. What did Miss Prism inadvertently swap for the baby in her charge?

Answer: A manuscript

Miss Prism had written a three volume novel in her spare time and, "In a moment of mental abstraction, for which I never can forgive myself, I deposited the manuscript in the basinette, and placed the baby in the hand-bag."
9. Cecily has a fortune of "about a hundred and thirty thousand pounds in the Funds." What are the Funds?

Answer: Government stocks

"The Funds" was a common term at the time for Government Bills. Cecily's fortune would be worth something like $6m today.
10. What is the name of Cecily's lawyers?

Answer: Markby, Markby and Markby

Lady Bracknell is impressed with the social prestige of Cecily's lawyers. "A firm of the very highest position in their profession. Indeed I am told that one of the Mr. Markby's is occasionally to be seen at dinner parties". Slaughter and May are real London laywers. The others, I made up.
