St Paul's is situated in the Bering Sea between Russia and Alaska. It is one of a group of islands called the Pribilof Islands which is part of the Aleutian Chain of islands. Close to it is Otter Island and the Walrus Islands, which are a wildlife sanctuary for walruses.

The indigenous peoples of the islands are the Aleuts who have lived there for over 200 years. One of the main reasons that Alaska was bought from the Russians was because of the thriving Fur Seal trade being operated by the Aleuts.

The tour season for the islands is from the middle of May to the middle of October.

It is from Limmershin that we first hear about the story of Kotick, the "White Seal", and his adventures in finding a safe haven for his community away from the seal hunters. Limmershin is a Winter Wren, member of the Troglodytes species, which is also known as the Northern Wren and tends to be found in coniferous woodlands throughout British Columbia and many of the northern states of the U.S.A..

It is an insectivore and can live in the cold climates by foraging for insects in the bark of the fir trees and fallen logs as well as spiders and seeds.

Kerguelen Island is part of an archipelago in the Southern Indian Ocean between Antarctic and Australia. It is one of 300 odd islands and reefs that make up the archipelago in an area of over 7,000 sq km. Winds up to 100 mph are common in this part of the southern oceans but luckily the area is free of ice. It is a member of the Terre Australes et Antarctiques Francaises which are scattered possessions belonging to France.
Prince Edward and Marion Islands are part of the Prince Edward Islands and belong to South Africa. They are part of South Africa's Cape of Good Hope Province. Both islands were created by volcanic activity and are situated within the area called the "Roaring Forties" which explains why there are no trees on either island.
Heard Island is part of a sub-antarctic island group along with McDonald Island. It is situated 4,000km south-west of Australia and lie within the area known as the "furious fifties".

The Hollushickie are young immature males, aged between three and six years of age, who fall between the pups and the adult males in the seal society. They are not allowed to mate with the females by the older males. It is the "Bachelors" who have sole use of Otter Island.

Whenever the pups are in the sea they are constantly on the lookout for predators such as the dreaded "Grampas", the Killer Whale. The Killer Whale, a.k.a. Orca, is really a large dolphin with five distinct types which vary due to geography. The Great White Shark and the Sea Leopard are also natural predators of the seal. The Sperm Whale prefers to eat squid.

A Sea Cow generally refers to the Dugongs found in the Indo-Pacific region grazing on sea grasses. Sea Leopards are the most ferocious of the seal family and are found on the pack ice in the summer and the sub-Antarctic islands in the winter and are the only seal to prey on other seal species.
A Sea Dog is another name for a sailor in the navy.

When Kotick, the "White Seal", is south of the Equator (Sticky Water) he feels a tingling sensation in his skin and is told by the leader of a pod of porpoises that a bad storm was heading their way and that he should seek shelter. It is an example of the senses that a seal has to develop to survive in the oceans of the world.

Kotick stumbles upon the seal cull on the island but is lucky because Kerick is superstitious upon seeing the white seal on the edge of the herd. He tells his men that he thinks that the white seal is the ghost of an old seal hunter Zarrahof who had died the year before during a big gale.
Kerick's job was to choose which seals, from the sea nurseries, were to be culled in the killing pens which were situated about a half a mile from his little village.

Curiosity got the better of Kotick, and he followed the seals as they were being herded to their deaths. Kerick believed that Kotick was the ghost of an old dead seal hunter called Zarrahof and this made him uneasy. A white seal is a very unusual animal and would spook anyone who was in any way superstitious.

With the help of his father, Sea-Catch, Kotick challenged and beat many male seals with the proviso that if he won the fight they would follow him to Sea Cow Tunnel. By dominating the mature males Kotick had control over the whole seal community and for many years after he went back to the island to lead more seals to the sanctuary.
