Drizzt was the third male born to Matron Malice Do'Urden. Drow families may only have two noble males, so Drizzt was to be sacrificed to the drow deity, Lolth, the Spider Queen. However, the same night that Drizzt was born, in the raid against House DeVir, secondboy Dinin killed his older brother, Nalfein, to become elderboy, and Drizzt's life was spared.

One of the first things to happen to the new students of Melee-Magthere is a battle to determine their respective ranks in the class. Kelnozz of House Kenafin suggested a pact between himself and the naïve Do'Urden secondboy, only to betray it later by 'stabbing' Drizzt in the back while he was fighting Berg'inyon, knowing he could never beat the skilled fighter in honourable combat. DeVir, Barrison del'Armgo and Faen Tlabbar are other powerful (or once-powerful, in the case of House DeVir) drow houses in Menzoberranzan.

The deep gnomes of the Underdark do not trust the drow at first, due to the reputation of his evil brethren. But Drizzt had encountered the svirfnebli before, while out on patrol during his final years at Melee-Magthere, and saved a Burrow Warden from his cruel older brother, Dinin, who instead of killing the svirfneblin merely cut off the gnome's hands.

The svirfneblin was one Belwar Dissengulp, who earned the title Most Honoured Burrow Warden after his encounter with the drow and was fashioned a mithril hammer and pickaxe to replace his mutilated appendages.

Zaknafein was the only drow in Menzoberranzan with the skill to defeat Drizzt, so Malice summoned his consciousness from beyond the grave to do battle with their son. In the final fight, Matron Malice is forced by Drizzt's skill with his scimitars to allow more and more of Zaknafein's consciousness to take over, until Zaknafein gains enough control to defy the Matron Mother of House Do'Urden and propel his undead body from the ledge into the lake of acid below.

After the boy (whom nobody believed about the 'drizzit' in the woods) is able to show his siblings the mysterious figure, their family is alarmed by the children's description of what is obviously a dark elf stalking around outside their house. They organize a hunting party to track Drizzt down and kill him, hoping that he is alone and not the scout for a drow raiding party.

Though he knows Drizzt to be a drow, Mooshie is the first surface-dweller to look past the dark elf's heritage and see him a unique individual who has chosen to follow his own path -- the path of the ranger's goddess Mielikki.

Upon his arrival at Ten-Towns in Icewind Dale, Drizzt addresses himself to Cassius, the councilman from Ten-Town's principal city of Bryn Shander. Cassius, though he believes the drow is earnest in his desire to be part of the towns, cannot let the dark elf roam the cities freely.

Instead, Drizzt is allowed to reside in the forests surrounding Kelvin's Cairn, to put his ranger skills to use as the towns' scout against the warmongering barbarians and other enemies.

Carrying his scimitar, Icingdeath, which he took from the hoard of the defeated white dragon of the same name, Drizzt is immune to the tanar'ri's fire. After a harrowing combat scene, Drizzt is victorious and banishes Errtu to the Abyss for 100 years. Later, in Mithril Hall, Bruenor is saved from the black dragon Shimmergloom because he is possessed of the scimitar, although he was then unaware of its magical properties.

The Lady Alustriel, magistrate of Silverymoon, sympathizes with the drow's plight and would like to grant him leave to explore her city. However, it is a time of political unrest for Silverymoon and Alustriel does not feel that the time is right for the citizens to be accepting of the dark elf.

After turning the Companions of the Hall (as Harkel Harpell dubbed them) away from the enchanted city, Lady Alustriel seeks out Drizzt to explain to him the "threats of war and secret alliances; rumours and suspicions that have no place in fact, nor would make any sense to reasonable people" that are quarry to her hospitality. Alustriel also mentions to Drizzt her sister, Dove Falconhand, a fellow ranger to Drizzt whom we first encounter in "Sojourn".

This is the hall where Catti-brie gets her magical bow Taulmaril, the Heartseeker, and its renewing quiver of arrows. After his death in "The Legacy" Wulfgar's warhammer, Aegis-fang (crafted by Bruenor Battlehammer, Eighth King of Mithril Hall), was placed here in reverence.

Throughout "The Halfling's Gem", Rassiter ever proclaims himself to be Entreri's equal, if not his better. At the end of the book, when Pasha Pook has fallen to Drizzt and his companions, Rassiter proposes an alliance between himself and the powerful Artemis Entreri. What he gets is the assassin's bejeweled dagger in his back.

Drizzt's companion is the evil Artemis Entreri, disguised as Regis using the enchanted mask that Drizzt stole from the banshee's lair near Conyberry. "Regis'" return to Mithril Hall was a ruse to deliver Drizzt into the waiting hands of Vierna Do'Urden and the mercenary band Bregan D'aerthe.

Wulfgar throws Aegis-fang to help Catti-brie battle an enemy, leaving himself defenceless to the reaching tentacles of Lolth's handmaiden. His body torn and crushed in the evil creature's maw, Wulfgar uses the last of his strength to smash the tunnel's ceiling above him, burying himself and the yochlol in the ensuing avalanche.

Jarlaxle reminds Entreri that Catti-brie followed Alustriel's magical locket to find Drizzt in the Underdark -- she could not possibly remember the way back to the surface. If Drizzt dies, Entreri will be at the mercy of the evil drow for the rest of his life. Jarlaxle, ever the sort to stir up trouble, also makes sure Entreri has access to Guenhwyvar's statue, which Drizzt and Catti-brie would be hard pressed to leave without.

Although Khazid'hea altered its hilt to resemble a unicorn, the symbol of Drizzt's goddess, Mielikki, to entice the drow to wield it, Drizzt gives the blade to Catti-brie, stating that he is more comfortable using his scimitars (neither of which are broken). Khazid'hea wants only to be wielded by the best swordsman, however, and since it is incapable of bending its blade to be that of a scimitar, the next best solution is to kill Drizzt...

Taulmaril is the magical bow that Catti-brie found in the Hall of Dumathoin, Twinkle is the scimitar given to Drizzt by Malchor Harpell that shines with a blue glow when danger is near, and Aegis-fang is Wulfgar's warhammer that was forged for him by his 'father', Bruenor.

The piwafwis feed on the innate magic of the Underdark. When Drizzt first began his life on the surface his cloak slowly lost its magic in the light of the sun, until it ripped apart into nothingness.

Briza was the eldest, and cruelest, of Drizzt's sisters. Vierna and Maya are Drizzt's two other sisters, and Dinin is Drizzt's older brother. When Zin-carla failed to return the renegade drow to Menzoberranzan, Briza killed her mother to take over leadership of House Do'Urden.

Her victory was fleeting, however, because with the failing of Lolth's precious gift House Do'Urden fell out of the goddess' favour and was slaughtered by fighters from House Baenre and Bregan D'aerthe, who were in the Do'Urden compound as protection for Matron Malice while she was within the throes of the Zin-carla spell (or so she thought...).

The circlet was given to Catti-brie by Fret (first encountered in "Sojourn"), a gift from the Lady Alustriel of Silverymoon to aid in the human girl's quest into the Underdark. With the circlet and a pendant that is attuned to Drizzt's biorhythms, Catti-brie is able to navigate the Underdark to Menzoberranzan where she assists in the rescue of her drow friend.
