The Legend of Gemmell Trivia Quiz

David Gemmell (1948-2006) was a truly gifted author. This is my tribute to him. Each question will outline the plot of a different book in the form of a protagonist's thoughts. You just need to tell me who it is, and from which book. Good Luck!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Death made me an offer. Two score more years of life alone in my mountain home, or one final stand where he awaits me at Dros Delnoch. Well, I never could picture myself over 60'. Who am I?

Answer: Druss from "Legend"

Druss is an old and gnarled warrior whose name and deeds are already legendary. He is asked for aid one last time to defend his homeland against an invading barbarian horde which outnumbers the defenders 500-1. "Legend" was Gemmell's first book, published in 1984.
2. 'They call me mix-blood, half-breed, I was raised among them but never one of them. I proved my worth in the General's Games and soon I will prove it to them on the battlefield. I am a man of destiny.' Who am I?

Answer: Parmenion from "Lion of Macedon"

Parmenion is the most gifted general Greece has ever known. He was raised and trained, albeit reluctantly, by the Spartans, who branded him an outcast. Building his skills and reputation in many battles he eventually comes back to face the might of Sparta itself. "Lion of Macedon" is the first of two books by Gemmell set in Ancient Greece.

The settings and some of the battles are based on fact, but the story is one he crafted himself.
3. 'We learned our skills from Sigellus the swordsman. I... we, are known as the deadliest swordsman of the age. Now the Daroth are here those skills will be put to the test.' 'Let them come brother, they shall taste death on our blade!' Who am I?

Answer: Chio/Dace from "Dark Moon"

Tarantio, or Chio for short, is one of Gemmell's most interesting characters. His body is inhabited by two personalities. He is passionate and has a good sense of honour and his 'brother' Dace is faster, stronger and far more deadly. Together they make a formidable team. "Dark Moon" is one of Gemmell's stand-alone novels in which an ancient race of 'immortal' killers thought forever vanished from the world is brought back with the sole purpose of wiping out humankind.
4. 'I am an assassin, a king-slayer. I think it is too late for my redemption but there is a chance I can help to make things right. For this I need to journey deep into the lands of our enemy to find the Armour of Bronze.' Who am I?

Answer: Waylander from "Waylander"

Waylander, known as the slayer, is feared and hated by all. He is considered a traitor to his people for murdering the King. When a ruthless army swarms into the land slaughtering all they encounter it falls to him to bring back the only artifact which may save them. The ancient Armour of Bronze. "Waylander" is Gemmell's third Novel.
5. 'My father was betrayed and murdered. I was weak, but I will become strong. I will train hard and take back what is rightfully mine. For this I will need my father's sword from the lake.' Who am I?

Answer: Thuro from "Ghost King"

Thuro is the weak heir of a warrior king, but when his father is murdered, Thuro escapes into the forest and is found and trained by the Lord of the Lance to help take his rightful place upon the throne. In "Ghost King" Gemmell gives us his take on Arthurian legend. Many of the characters from King Arthur and Camelot are easily recognisable though the names have been altered.
6. 'They call me The Damned, and so it is true. I slaughtered an entire city in the name of love, but could do it no longer. I left and became a priest seeking to change my ways, but the one I love has other plans.' Who am I?

Answer: Skilgannon from "White Wolf"

Skilgannon the Damned was a general under the command of Jianna the Witch Queen, whom he loved. His conscience would not let him stay with her army after he led the slaughter of the city of Perapolis in her name, and so he left. Jianna, however, is not willing to let him leave so easily and her thirst for power is only growing stronger. "White Wolf" is another book in Gemmell's famous Drenai setting and also features a middle aged Druss, who is still carving his own Legend.
7. "I belong to no man and take my pleasures where I want them. I am being told it is my birthright to lead my people. I don't want this, but they are being slaughtered by the Outlanders. I cannot let this happen. I will become their warrior queen.' Who am I?

Answer: Sigarni from "Ironhand's Daughter"

"Ironhand's Daughter" is the first of two books by Gemmell set in a world that resembles the Scottish Highlands. Sigarni, an orphan after her parents were brutally murdered, must accept her heritage and unite her people under her war banner against the invading Outlanders led by the ambitious Baron Gottasson.
8. 'I am the Jerusalem man. I live in a world which toppled on its axis. I am a gunslinger, one of the best. Abaddon, the lord of the pit, is seeking to take control of everything with his hellish army. He made a mistake when he took the woman I love. I will get her back or die trying.' Who am I?

Answer: Jon Shannow from "Wolf in Shadow"

"Wolf in Shadow" is the first of Gemmell's Jon Shannow Trilogy set in an apocalyptic future where the earth has tilted on its axis turning most of the world into a barren wasteland. Jon is a man of God and has a strong sense of justice but has it tested daily in his harsh life as a gunslinger, and it's not made any easier when he's drawn into a deadly battle to save his love and what's left of their world.
9. 'My Father was a coward. He died in battle fleeing the enemy. I will never be that man. I will travel to city of Stone to learn how to fight and how to lead so when I am king I can keep my people safe.' Who am I?

Answer: Connavar from "Sword in the Storm"

"Sword in the Storm" is Gemmell's first book of the Rigante series set in an alternate earth around the time that Rome, (called Stone in the book,) was becoming a major world power. The book follows the life of Connavar, the young prince with a good heart and a fierce temper.

He travels to Stone to see the world and learn the art of war and soon realises that Stone will soon be turning their attention to his homeland so he returns home to prepare for the oncoming war.
10. 'I am a prince. I came to this great city only to find its doom seems inevitable. There is a war coming, I can sense it. I am trained well with my sword but not even I can stop what is coming. Yet I cannot leave, I must stay and do what I can.' Who am I?

Answer: Helikaon from "Lord of the Silver Bow"

"Lord of the Silver Bow" is the first in a trilogy depicting events surrounding and including the Trojan War. The book focuses on the unknown hero Helikaon, a prince of Dardania who falls in love with Hektor's wife. Sadly David Gemmell died while writing the thirrd and final book in this trilogy.

His wife agreed to finish the book using the notes he made. He will be greatly missed. I hope you enjoyed this quiz and that it brought back some great memories for you or encouraged you to try some of his work.
