Somerset Maugham based his novel on the painter Gauguin. He took serious poetic license with the character including making him English.
2. What was Strickland's employment in England?

Answer: stockbroker

He was described to the narrator at a party as being very dull and not at all interested in literature or the arts.
3. Who was considered an object of ridicule and thought that Strickland was a great artist?

Answer: Dirk Stroeve

Stroeve's wife left him for Strickland and inevitably Strickland left her. She later killed herself.
4. Where did Strickland head to paint after his time in Paris?

Answer: Tahiti

Of course Tahiti. Any decent art musuem has a Tahiti picture by Gauguin.
5. What characteristic interested Strickland in people, particularly the narrator?

Answer: Indifference to his feelings

Whenever the narrator wanted to get Strickland's attention or see his work he feigned disinterest.
6. Did the narrator ever see Strickland after he left France?

Answer: no

The narrator never saw Strickland, but learned about his adventures through talking to others that knew him. At the end of one chapter, the narrator states that he knew the source was an outrageous liar and had probably never seen Strickland in his life.
7. How does Strickland perceive women?

Answer: as a necessary evil

He despises the lust that he feels and which distracts him from his work.
8. How does the narrator become involved in Strickland's life?

Answer: Strickland's first wife sends the narrator after him

Srickland's first wife believes that he left her for a woman and she realizes he won't come back when the narrator tells her that there is not another woman. She was hoping for a passing infatuation.
9. What did Strickland care about?

Answer: that people leave him alone

Strickland only wanted to paint and did not care about fame or wealth. The narrator states that Strickland was single-hearted in his aim and willing to sacrifice not only himself, but others. He say he was an odious man, but great.
10. What did Strickland die of?

Answer: leprosy

He went off into the bush to paint until he died.
