DeeTee and Jake test out the Device, and at first think they have failed, until DeeTee notices that on the back of a Phonebook has what she thinks is a misprint. Investigation reveals that the Universe they have traveled into does not contain the letter J in the English alphabet.

After being elected Captain, Hilda proves quickly and decisively that she is a far better Captain than Zebbie, despite his former military service.

She was the ship the Captain William "Buck" Rogers and company used to search the galaxy for the lost groups of humans who left Earth after WWIII.

It is interesting to note that earlier in the book Heinlein himself had dismissed "Stranger in a Strange Land" (one of his most famous novels) as not being a very good book. (The exact phrasing (from Zebbie) is "My God, the things some people will do for money!")
