Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress", Manuel 'Manny' Garcia O'Kelly and his spouses take a new wife, named after one of the States of America, into their "line marriage". Who is she?

Answer: Wyoming Knott

First published in 1966, "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" introduced the sentient 'computer person' Mycroft Holmes, known as Mike. It is also the novel in which Heinlein coined the phrase TANSTAAFL - There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.
2. Oscar Gordon answers a job vacancy ad in the newspaper and ends up employed as a bodyguard to the beautiful and mysterious Star. After they are married, he finds out she has a 'secret job' that she never told him about; what is her job?

Answer: Empress of the Universe

Oscar is hired as a Hero, to protect Star on her quest to retrieve a stolen "Soul Egg" containing the memories of one of the previous Emperors. You can read their adventures in "Glory Road" which was first published in 1963.
3. Deety Burroughs and her father Jacob both get married at once in a double wedding. Who do they marry?

Answer: Zeb Carter and Hilda Corners

Zeb and Deety, and Jake and Hilda run for their lives from the "Black Hats" and end up crossing time and space in Zeb's car. They feature in several of Heinlein's "Future History" books, and their wedding can be found in "The Number of the Beast", first published in full novel form in 1980.
4. In which of Heinlein's short stories does Potiphar Breen meet his soon to be wife, Meade Barstow, when she takes all her clothes off in the middle of the street?

Answer: The Year of the Jackpot

"The Year of the Jackpot" was first serialised in "Galaxy" magazine in four parts, in 1952. It was then included in the short story collection "The Menace From Earth", first published in 1959.
5. Joan Eunice Branca, who shares her body with Johann Sebastian Bach Smith, marries their lawyer. Who is he?

Answer: Jake Saloman

Johann is a billionaire, and to 'be young again' he uses his money to arrange for a brain transplant to a young, healthy body. It is only after the operation that he discovers his new body is not only female, but is that of his secretary Eunice Branca, who was killed in a mugging. Both their personalities end up 'in bed together' in Eunice's body, and they marry lawyer Jake.
This strange tale forms the plot of "I Will Fear no Evil", which was first published, in 'unpolished first draft,' form in 1970.
6. Daniel Boone Davis is tricked out of his business by his fiancee and his double crossing best friend. Eventually he travels through time (twice), finds his cat, makes another fortune, and rescues and marries his own true love. Who is she?

Answer: Ricky Gentry

"The Door Into Summer" has one of Heinlein's recurring themes, with time travel, and a beautiful red haired heroine. First published in novel form in 1957, it was originally serialised in "The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction" the previous year.
7. Gwen Novak, aka Hazel Stone, married Colin Campbell, aka Richard Ames, because "a history book said that she did". During their first dinner date, she ended up committing a rather large faux pas. What did she do?

Answer: Shot a man dead at their table

The mysterious stranger sits down with Richard just long enough to say "Tolliver must die", and then falls dead, having been shot. It is only at the end of a very typically convoluted Heinlein plot that Hazel reveals it was she who shot him.
Their story is told in "The Cat Who Walks Through Walls", first published in 1985.
8. When Bill Lermer's father, George, marries Molly Kenyon, Bill is convinced that the marriage has been made for one reason only. What is that reason?

Answer: So they can emigrate to Ganymede

Only families are eligible to apply to emigrate to Ganymede, and escape the desperate overcrowding and food shortages on Earth. Bill thinks that this is why George and Molly get married, as he still misses his mother a great deal. In actual fact, George and Molly love each other dearly, and eventually they have twins of their own, and they and Billy become a real family.
The Lermer's story is told in "Farmer in the Sky", which was first published in full novel form in 1953.
9. Who is the first husband of Maureen Johnson? (He is also the father of sixteen of her first seventeen children!)

Answer: Brian Smith

"Mama Maureen" Johnson is the mother of Woodrow Wilson Smith, later Lazarus Long, from Heinlein's "Future History" books. Her wedding to Brian Smith takes place in "To Sail Beyond the Sunset", which was the last of Heinlein's novels to be published while he was still alive, in 1987.
10. In which novella do Joe and Gail marry via telepathy just before they are killed on their mission to save the world?

Answer: Gulf

Joe struggles with telepathy, but under the stress of imminent death for both himself and the woman he loves, he makes the vital breakthrough to reach Gail's mind with his. They exchange their vows even as the 'baddies' close in, and are both killed shortly afterwards.
"Gulf" was originally published in "Astounding Science Fiction" magazine, in the November and December issues of 1949.
