Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is Kino in this story?

Answer: A man who collects pearls.

Kino is the main character in this story. This book is about him finding a pearl, and losing it again.
2. Who is Kino's wife?

Answer: Juana

Juana and Kino had a baby called Coyotito, which is another main character of this story. Coyotito was Juana's first baby, and she liked it really much, so much that she is willing to give up her life for him. Juana lived a poor life with Kino, but she did not hate the life at all. She liked it instead.
3. Where did Coyotito, the baby, sleep?

Answer: In a box

The box was hung from the roof, and Coyotito, as Juana's first-born baby, slept in there every night. Coyotito's family lived a peaceful life, until one morning, something happened to Coyotito.
4. Is the morning when the story starts a normal morning?

Answer: Yes, and it is a little more perfect than normal mornings

As the book says, this is 'a morning like other mornings yet perfect among mornings'. This was the first phrase I have remembered in this story - it is really interesting.
5. In this morning, a surprising incident happened. Coyotito got stung by a scorpion. How did Coyotito's mom react to Coyotito's scorpion sting after he got stung by a scorpion?

Answer: She sucked out the poison from Coyotito very calmly

In this dangerous morning, Coyotito got stung by a scorpion, and Kino and Juana knew that it was very very dangerous for a baby to get stung by a scorpion. Yet Juana remained quite calm considering that a scorpion's sting could easily kill a baby.
6. Why was it so surprising that Kino and Juana decided they wanted a doctor?

Answer: They didn't have money to pay for the treatment

Juana and Kino didn't have any money, and the doctor wouldn't come to the village to cure someone unless he was paid. Since the doctor wouldn't come to them, Kino and Juana went to the doctor to ask for treatment.
7. Why did the doctor not come with Juana and Kino to treat Coyotito?

Answer: They had no money to pay him

As stated before, the doctor wouldn't come unless there was money to pay for him. Even when they came to ask him in person, he refused.
8. Which of these best describes the doctor who Kino asked to come treat Coyotito?

Answer: Fat, lazy, and very rich

The doctor was fat - his fingers were too big for his beautiful imported cup, and he sat there on his sofa eating his breakfast slowly. He had a large greatly decorated house, and a servant to serve him.
9. What did the doctor say was the reason he could not treat Coyotito?

Answer: He had a very important appointment to go to

He made up this reason, obviously, and that is why Kino was very furious about that.
10. What did Kino offer as payment for the treatment, which the doctor refused to accept?

Answer: Eight tiny pearls

The doctor didn't come to cure Coyotito because he thought that the pearls were really worthless, so he came up with an excuse not to come.
